Description
v R.D. SHUTT. DETQAGHABLE WAGON STAKE.
No. 311,206. Patented Jan. 27, 1885.
r r I 1 U ITED STATES ATENT FFICE.
ROBERT D. SHUTT, OF OAPAO, MICHIGAN.
'DETACHABLE WAGON-STAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,206, dated January 27, 1885.
(No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT D. SHUTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gapac, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Detachable Stake for Wagons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to detachable stakes for wagons; and it has for its object to provide a device adapted to be detachably secured to the standard, and arranged so as to providea rest for an extra board directly over the sideboard of the wagon.
With this object in view the said invention consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wagon, showing my improved stake applied in position there to. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the stake with the proximate parts in relative position. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of 'the same.
Like letters refer to corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, Adesignates the bolster of a wagon provided with the usual standard, 13, attached thereto in any suitable manner, a metallic facing-plate, G, being secured or fitted around the standard to prevent wear and strengthen the same.
D designates the stake, provided with a downwardly-extending arm, E, arranged to pass through pivoted rings or links F, secured to the outer sides of the standard, the inner face of the arm being formed flat to fit the outer face of the standard, and the outer face of the arm being rounded to allow the links or rings to fit around the same. The arm E tapers or decreases in size downward from the top, and the upper and lower links H designates a U-shaped hangenplate se- I to, of the herein described stake provided 100 are of corresponding size, to more readily fit the stake, a spring rod or plate, G, being secured to the outer face of the stake and adapted to spring over the upper link, and thus hold the stake from displacement.
cured to the inner face of the body of the stake at the upper end, said hanger coming directly over the side-board of the wagon, so that the extra board placed therein will also come in line therewith.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the annexed drawlugs.
The stake is applied to the standard by passing thelower end downward through the links until the upper end of the stake rests securely on the top of the standard, and the spring plate or rod has been sprung around the upper link. In this position the spring plate or rod will effectually hold the stake from accidental displacement, and may be readily operated to permit the detachment of the stake. The extra board may then be sus pended within the hanger-plate, so as to come directly over the side-board of the wagon, and the parts are then in condition for use.
By means of the device shown there will be no danger of the extra boards falling out of place while loading or unloading the wagon.
The improved stake shown may be applied to all kinds of wagons for the purpose of suspending in position any suitable number of extra boards to increase the capacity of the wagon.
It is very simple, durable, and inexpensive in construction, and will prove of great utility for the purposes intended.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. The combination, with the standard provided with a series of rings or links, of the herein-described stake arranged to pass through the links, and a spring catch or rod adapted to spring around one of the links, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the standard, of the herein-described stake detachably fitted to the standard, and provided with a hanger'plate arranged on the inner face of the same, and adapted to suspend the extra board on a line with the sideboard of the wagon, as set forth.
8. The combination, with the standard having two ormore links or rings secured therewith a downwardly extending arm passing through the links, the upper portion of the stake resting on the top of the standard and 7 V r V provided on its inner face with a hanger-plate ROBBED SHUT 5 to receive an extra board, as and for the pur- "Witnesses:
pose set forth.
MICHAEL KELLY,
DIE WVALKER.
my own I have hereto affixed my signature in' presence of two witnessee In testimony that I claim the foregoing as
