A. J. CONWAY.
COVERING FOR GHIMNEY TOPS.
Patented Jan} 20, 1885.
FIG.-3.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW J. CONWAY, OF BELLEVILLE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO EDWARD W. WEST, J It, OF SAME PLACE.
COVERING FOR CHIMNEY-TOPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 311,105, dated January 20, 1885.
Application filed September 25, 1883.
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that 1, ANDREW J. CONWAY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Belleville, in the county of St. Clair and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Coverings for Chimney-Tops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in caps or covers for protecting the tops of chimneys of buildings, &c.; and the objects of my improvement are, first, to protect the upper portion of brick chimneys, and prevent'the loosening of the mortar between the top courses of brick by the action of the weather, with the consequent loosening of the bricks, so that they would spread or fall off; second, to provide a weather-break to prevent the snow and rain from blowing down into the chimney, and also to serve the purpose of a stiffening-brace for my improved cover. I attain these objects by the construction of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved cover, adapted as a cover to a square brick chimney. Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal section of my improved cover, and Fig. 3 is a detail transverse section.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the different views.
Referring to the drawings, A represents an inclosing-band to surround the top portion of the chimney B, being provided with outwardl'y-turned flanges a,-over which slip the inwardly-turned edges 0 of the cap portion O, to secure the two parts together.
In forming my improved chimney-cover I prefer to employ galvanized sheet-iron or other (No model.)
suitable sheet material, yet the parts may be formed of cast metal, if desired or found most convenient, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
In forming the cover A of sheet metal a strip of the required length will be taken and bent at right angles, with the ends riveted to form a casing for surrounding the sides of the chimney, the horizontal flanges a being formed by bending down the top edges of the casing, as shown, and the cap portion will have three of its edges turned inward to form the inturned flanges or lips 0, while the other edge is left straight, so as to permit of the parts A 0 being engaged together endwise, after which the straight edge will be bent down to lock the parts together. The central parts of the cover 0 will be cut diagonally across its center to form an opening the size of the chimneyopening. The longer wings, c 0, thus formed will be bent upward to form weather-breaks, to prevent snow and rain from blowing into and down the chimney, and also form a brace to stiffen and strengthen the cap 0, while the shorter wings, 0' 0, will be bent downward to form fastening-flanges that may be fastened to the inside of the chimney with nails.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A chimney-cover consisting of an incasing portion, A, and a cap portion, 0, provided with weather-breaks c c and fastening-flanges 0' 0 as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof witness my hand this 19th day of September, A. D. 1883.
ANDREW J. CONW'AY.
