SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,758, dated January 13, 1885.

Be it known that I, FREDERICK D. WEBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at East New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paper-Files, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of paper files in which the sheets are fastened to sup- 1 porting-leaves which are hinged to fold together in book form; and it consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter described, whereby an article of superior utility is obtained.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a face View of a paper-file embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view looking at the back of the article. Fig. 3 is a cross-section thereof. Fig. 4 is adetail cross-section on the line (17 .70, Fig. 1.

Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. The letter A designates the sheet-supporting leaves, which are hinged together on one edge by means of links B, and provided ad- 2 jacent to such edge with barbs O, for piercing the sheets of paper to be filedl The links B engage with joint-pins D, which are arranged in knuckles E on the proper edges of the leaves, these knuckles being constructed to accom- 0 modate fingers G, which are hung to the jointpins D at points opposite to the barbs G of the supporting-leaves, and which are provided with slots t to receive the barbs.

In applying the file to use, the sheets are 5 laid on the desired leaves and the latter are folded together, when, by the pressure of the fingers G, the sheets are forced down upon the barbs O, causing thelatter to pierce the sheets, and thereby hold them in position on the 0 leaves, the barbs entering the slots of the fingers. The leaves A are composed of sheet metal, and the barbs O are struck up therefrom to project in opposite directions, as shown in Fig. 4, so that the barbs are on op- 4 5 posite sides of the leaves, respectively, and both sides are adapted to receive the sheets to be filed. The fingers G also are on opposite sides of the leaves, so as to accord with the barbs, and the double fingers are made in one piece, they being composed of a strip of sheet metal, which is bent to the shape shown in Figs. 3 and 4. E'ach of the leaves A is provided on the free edge with ribs or offsets J, of a height or thickness equal to that of the knuckles E, so that when the leaves are folded 5 on each other spaces are created between them to accommodate the sheets laid upon the leaves, the effect of which is to protect the sheets against pressure. In the example shown the ribs J are on each of the free edges of the leaves A; but, if desirable, the ribs of the end edges, .9 8, may be omitted, inasmuch as the rib o of the longitudinal free edge suffices to keep the leaves apart from each other.

The number of the leaves A may be varied, and, if desirable, they may be indexed in the manner of a book.

The fingers G may be composed of wires instead of sheet metal, and may be construct ed to close elastically instead of by the press are of the leaves.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1.' The combination, in a paper-file, of a series of leaves which are hinged together on one edge and provided adjacent to such edge with barbs for piercing the sheets to be filed, and the slotted fingers hung to the joint-pins of the leaves,for depressing the sheets on the barbs, substantially as described.

2. The combination, in a paper-file, of a series of hinged leaves, of sheet metal, having sheet-piercing barbs struck up therefrom to project in opposite directions, for adapting both sides of the leaves to receive the sheets to be filed, and the double fingers hung to the joint-pins of the leaves, for depressing the sheets on the barbs of both sides of the leaves, substantially as described.

3. The combination, in a paper-file, of the double fingers hung to the jointpins, and the series of leaves, of sheet metal, having barbs struck-up therefrom in opposite directions, and provided at their free edges with the ribs or offsets J, substantially as set forth.
