WASHINGTON JONES, OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOBACCO-BOOKING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,593, dated January 13, 1885.
(N0 model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WAsHINeroN J owes, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Tobaceo-Booking Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to'machines for booking or padding leaf-tobacco; and the object of my improvement is to open the sides of the table from the holding pads or blocks with the hand when spreading the tobacco-leaf over the table, avoiding the necessity of using the feet. I attain this object by dividing the table into two sections and hinging them at the top, each section working independently of the other, and forcing the holding-blocks from the table by means of asysteni of levers and rods connecting them.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of my device, Fig. 2 a side view, and Fig. 3 a top view, of the same.
Similarletters refer to similar parts th roughout the several views.
A A are the two sections of the table, which are hinged at m m. The lower ends of the table-sections have side pieces, 1), which facilitate their connection with the clamps b by means of the rods?" 1",and the levers Z, having fulcrums f in the crosspieces P of the frame. The sections A A are forced outward by means of springs s, resting against the vertical frame piece B. One end of each of the clamps b is pivoted in the cross-piece P at n, the other end being supported by a bent rod, 0, secured to the front of the frame. As will be seen, the pressure of the hand in spreading each end of the tobacco-leaf over the table forces the section inward and throws the clamp outward, and as soon as the hand is removed the spring behind the section of the table forces it outward and closes it and the clamp upon each other. In using this machine it is placed be tween the knees, and one great advantage in my device,in addition to the points mentioned, is that it can be drawn as near the body as may be desired, and can be used by either men or women. Shifting-blocks can be placed inside of the clamp 1), similar to those used in my booking device, for which I filed an application for Letters Patent December 16, 1882.
WVhat "I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, in a booking-machine, of a table divided into two sections which are hinged at their point ofjuncture, the lower edges of said sections being held away from the leg of said table by means of springs with clamps for holding tobacco in position on said table, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, in a booking-machine, of a table divided into two sections hinged at their point of juncture, the lower edges of said sections being held away from the leg of said table by means of springs with clamps for holding tobacco in position on said table,
and pivoted to their supports, each section being connected with its respective clamp by rods 1' r, and lever Z, whereby the inward movement of the table section opens its clamp in the opposite direction, as and for the purpose herein set forth.
