BELT-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,442, dated January 6, 1885.
Application filed July 10, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS KELLS, of Brooklyn, (Green Point P. O.,) in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt-Fastenings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is an inside plan View of my improved fastening, shown as applied to a belt. Fig. 2 is an outside plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the same, taken through the line :v r, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the fastening.
The object of this invention is to provide belt-fastenings simple in construction, easily applied, and reliable in use.
The invention consists in a belt-fastening made of wire bent for about half its length into zigzag form, and having its angles bent upward at right angles, to adapt it to be applied to the ends of a belt by passing its angle-loops through holes in the said ends, passing one end through the said angle-loops, forming a second set of zigzags, and twisting the two ends together, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A B represent the adjacent ends of a belt, in each of which is formed a row of holes, 0, to receive the fastening, the holes of each row being opposite the spaces between the holes of the other row.
The fastening is made of wire, which for about half its length is bent into a series of zigzags, D, the angles of which are bent upward at right angles, forming a series of loops, E, the number of loops on each side being equal to the number of holes in each end of the belt. The holes 0 are made at such a distance from the ends of the belt that when the said ends are brought together the rows of holes will be at the same distance apart as the rows of loops E of the zigzags D. The holes (3 are formed to a gage, so as to be in the right positions.
In using the fastening the two ends A B of the belt are brought together, and the loops E and the ends F G of the wire are passed through the holes 0 in such a direction that the zigzags D will be on the inner side of the belt. passed through the loops E successively, forming a second series of zigzags, H, upon the outer side of the belt, as shown in Fig. 2, and the two ends F G are twisted together, as shown at the point I in Fig. 2. As the belt is used, the fastening beds itself in the belt, so as to leave the surface of the belt smooth.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A belt-fastening, as a new article of manufacture, made substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of a wire bent for about half its length into zigzag form, and having its angles bent up ward at right angles, to form a series of loops adapted to be applied to the ends of a belt, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the ends A B of a belt, of the wire fastening having zigzags D and angle-loops E, having its endF passed through the said loops E, forming zigzags H, and having its ends twisted together, substantially as herein shown and described.
