NiTnn STATES PATENT FFICEO BENJAMIN A. DRAYTON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FAN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,890, dated June 9, 1885.
Application filed May 19, 1884.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN A. DRAY- TON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Holder for Fans and Similar Articles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in holders for fans, small screens, shades, and like articles, and the object is to provide a useful and ornamental device for the uses stated.
My invention consists in the improved article of manufacture hereinafter fully described, and specifically stated.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of'this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device; and Fig. 2 is a front view of the holding mechanism with a fan therein, shown by the dotted lines.
The letter A represents a tubular supportingstandard formed with an enlarged base, a, and ornamental cup or flange b, and provided with a collar, 0, and set-screw d at the top of the standard.
The letter B represents a rod fitted to the bore of the tubular standard A, and bent to one side, substantially as shown in the drawings at e in Fig. 1. In the top of this rod B is a hole, through which is passed a small metal bar, f, formed with a central curved portion, g, and secured in the rod by a set-screw or other suitable means. To the ends of this bar (No model.)
tained by means of the torsion-spring j, fixed about the bar f with its free end secured to the bar z, substantially as shown in-Fig. 2 of the drawings. The bari is smaller circumferentially than the fixed jaw h, so that in its pivotal movement it may pass under the arch of the latter.
It will be seen that the device is extensible vertically, and may be 'set at any desired height or length by moving the rod within the standard and securing it by the set-screw, and that the fan or other article held may be set and secured at any desired position by turning the bar f in its bearing.
The operation is apparent: The jaws are drawn apart and the object inserted between them, when the force of the torsion-springs operates to clamp the jaws and hold the object. The device is particularly adapted to, hold decorated fans, but may be used to hold cards, shades, or small screens.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, the article-holder herein described, consisting of the tubular standard A, having base a, ornamental flange b, and set-screw d, the rod B, extensible within the standard, and clamping means consisting of the bar f, formed with the curved central portion, 9, the fixed bar or jaw h,movable bar or jaw t, and the spring j, the whole combined, arranged, and adapted for use substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set hand in the presence of two attesting witnesses.
BENJAMIN A. DRAYTON.
