Description
TOBAGGOHILLBR. No. 319,727. A Patented June 9, 1885.
INVQENTOR z /W/ W W I'INESSES:
Nirn STATES ATENT rider-3 TO BACCO-H l LLER.
.'PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,727, dated June 9. 1885.
Application filed August 14, 1884. Renewed May 11, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AooB W. KAUFFivrAN, of Miamisburg, ,in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented a newand useful Improvement in Tobacco-Hillers,whieh iinprovement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved tobaoco hiller. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same.
The presentinvention relates to an arrangement for hilling` the soil for tobaccoplanting, whereby the regularity and rapidity of the process are greatly facilitated.
In the drawings, A is a frame of ordinary construction, formed either of wood or of iron, as may be desired. A wheel,B, of sufficient size, of iron preferably, is provided With the axle O,.to which it is securely attached. The axle C is journaled to the top of the frame near its forward end. tallie disk, D, is provided, with a series of openings, E, near its periphery. One or more lngs or pins, F, are placed in these openings, as may be desired, for the purpose hereinafter described. Forward of the aXle-journal an upright arm or support, G, is placed, with its lower end firnily secured to the frame A. To the upper end is attached a Vertical spring, H, of such a length that its lower end Will bear against the lug on the disk D as the disk revolves and the lug approaches the upper part of its curve. Near the lower end of the' spring, but somewhat above Where it Strikes the lug, an opening, I, is provided. Extending from this opening, and With one end secured in the opening, is a rod, J, extending rearwardly over the cross-piece K. A staple or guard, L, is placed over the rod to keep it in position, and through which it freely works. A square block or piece, M, provided with a horizontal aXis, N, is journaled to the lower side of the pieces A, near their rear part. This block is of such a length laterally as to fit between the sides of the frame. The forward similar wings.
Near one end of the axle a mesuch a position that the tangential plates in their revolution come in contact with the rear end of the rod J. At the forward part of the frame A is a rod, P, the ends secured to the sides of the frame, while the center extends forward`,to the central part ofwhich the horse is attached. As will be seen, the piece M,having` the tangential plates' O,is held in position bymeans of the rear end of the rod J. One of its blades-the forward oneis inavertical position. This, as the machine moves forward, hills up the soil. The revolution of the wheel and the accompanying disk brings the lug Fin contact with the lower end of the spring H. The spring` H and rod attached are thus moved forward by the lug. The tangential plate is thus released, which allows the piece to revolve partly around and the Vertical tangential plate to turn at an angle and thus slide over the soil just heaped up. Thepiece M revolves until the next tangential shovel approaches the upper side of the rod J. If one lug or pin is placed in the disk, a hill is made at each revolution of the drive-wheel. As may be desired, the distanoe between the hills may be shortened by the insertion of a more or less number of pins in the openings of the disk.
What I claim as new is- 1. In atobaceo-hiller, a disk provided with lopenings and the pins, the spring` and support,
in combination with the block or piece M, journaled horizontally, the faces provided with tangential Wings or blades, as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The combination, in a tobacco-hiller, of the frame A, provided with handles, the drivewheel and aXle, With the disk provided with openings and lugs, the spring and support, the rod, and the block or piece M, journaled horizontally, the faces provided with tangential Wings or blades, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set niy hand, this lst day of March, 1884, in the presence of witnesses.
JACOB WILSON KAUFFMAN. Witnesses:
