EJPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,625, dated June 9, 1885.
Application filed April 9, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH F. ROWLETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Wayne and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in DoorStops; and I do hereby dcclarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to the common class of doors in business-rooms and dwellings.
My invention consists of the mechanism hereinafter described and claimed for the purpose of securing a door in any desired position when open.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same. Fig. 3 is an inverted front elevation of the supportingframe. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of a camshaped revolving plate having aslot conforming in shape to the outer edge of the same. Fig. 5 is a plan View of a cap-frame and guide.
In Fig. 1, A represents the face of a door, and B is a cam or conoidal shaped plate ar ranged to partially revolve on an axisrpin, E. The outer edge of the plate 13 is of conoidal or involute form, the end of which is provided with a knob, D, secured to the plate by screw D.
The plate B is furnished with an involute slot, 0, extending the length of the plate at the same curve of the edge thereof and equidistant from said edge, said slot being provided on its inner edge with corrugations across the face of the same horizontally, G.
A hole, E, admits an axis-pin, E, upon which the plate B is allowed a partial revolu tion. F, Figs. 1 and 3, is a supporting frame consisting of a vertical bar having a crossarm, F, secured to its upper end, provided with holes, in which screws are inserted to fasten the same to the face of the door which it is intended to operate. The face of the bar F has a semicircular recess, F, (shown at f, Fig. 3,) in which the stop-rod d is partially embedded, and in which it is permitted avertical motion when operated by the conoidal plate B through the involute slot 0.

A cap-frame, G, Figs. 1 and 5, is made in T form, the cross-bar H of which is provided with a horizontal projection, 72, recessed on the inside, which receives the lower end, f, of the bar F of the supportingfraine. The crossbar H is furnished with screwholes near the outer ends, in which screws are inserted to secure the same to the face of the door. The stoprod d is bent at right angles at the top, the horizontal portion forming a pin, a,which is inserted in and is operated by the involute slot- 0 of the plate 13, the upper portion of the stop-rod d being kept in position by having its bearing in the semicircular recess F of the bar F of the supporting-frame.
\Vhen the conoidal plate B is in the position shown in Fig. 1,the end of the involute slot 0 is at its highest point and holds the pin a of the stop-rod d at a, point where the foot c of i the stop-rod is on a horizontal plane with the bottom of the door and is free from the floor. As the plate B is turned on its axis E,by raising the knob D the stop-rod d is allowed to sink by its own weight,or is forced down by the corrugated surface of involute slot 0 until the footpiece e rests upon the floor at any point where it is desired to have the door step, when any pressure upon the knob D is imparted to the foot-piece e and holds the same upon the floor, as required. The foot'piece c is elastic, and preferably made of vulcanized rubber and secured to the lower end of the stop-rod by any suitable means. of the plate I3, slot 0, pin a, and their attachments,when in operation to act as a stop on a door, are shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and by reversing the plate 13 the stop-rod (Z is raised and the door released.
