LADYS SKIRT PROTECTOR; No. 319,477. Patented June 9, 1885.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLOTTE A. GANDIL, OF BROOKLYN, N EW YORK.
LADYS SKI RT- PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,477, dated June 9, 1885.
Application filed December 1, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLOTTE A. GANDIL, of thecity of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, and a citizen of the United States of America, have invented a new and useful Ladys Skirt-Protector, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of the same, in which Figure l is a view in section of my new skirt-protector attached to a skirt, and Fig. 2 is a side perspective view of the said protector unfolded.
The object of my invention is the protection of the bottom of ladies skirts from being soiled or wet by contact with mud or water while the wearer is walking on muddy or wet ground or walks.
A is my PIOtGCtOLWhlCh consists of a broad band of rubber cloth or other suitable waterproof materialsuch as oiled silk, water-proof cloth, &c. The diameter of the band'shonld equal that ofthe skirt with which it is to be worn, and the width should be sufficient to enable it to be folded over around the bottom edge of the skirt, and, when thus folded, to extend upward from the bottom edge inside and outside of the skirt several inehes-say, six or eight inches. The lower margin of the protector is provided with an elastic gathering cord or band run into a pocket formed around the protector, as represented at a, Fig. 2. This gathering-band may be the common rubber elastic tape or cord, and the pocket for it preferably formed by turning over a hem at the lower edge of the protector of sufficient width, and fastening it with two rows of stitches, as shown in Fig. 2. This band will gather the edge of the protector upon the skirt when folded over it, which is desirable.
Attached to the lower edge of the protector are a number of devices, I), for securing the said lower edge to the skirt when the same is folded over it, as seen in Fig. 1. I prefer to employ for this purpose the common springclamp formed of two jaws pivoted together near the middle provided with a spring, whieh acts to close the jaws. But I do not limit myself to-the use of this special clamp. Any equivalent device which may be conveniently secured to the edge of the protector and readily attached to and detached from the skirt, may be employed for the purpose.
I prefer to secure the protector permanently to a short inner skirt to be worn with the proteetor. In place of such short skirt, tapes or bands may be used attached to a waistband; or means may be employed to detachably connect the upper edge of the protector to a short skirt or to the inner face of the outer skirt, such as hooks and eyes or buttons and buttonholes.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure b'y Letters Patent, is
Askirt-protector consisting of the described band of water-proof fabric provided at its lower edge with the described elastic gathering-cord and attaching devices, the whole being adapted to be worn with and folded over the lower edge of a ladys skirt,as described.
