SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,096, dated June 2, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known'that I, EDWARD O. JUDD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusctts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lasts for Beating- Out Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, of which-- Figure l is a side view of a last-supporting base provided with a rib on which is adjusted the last B, the said base being marked A. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal and sectional view of the same. Fi g. 3 is a vertical cross-section of the same through the line Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of a last supporting base having a last secured thereto by means of a screw. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal and sectional view of a last supporting base having a groove to receive a last with an appropriate tenon.

My invention relates to an improved construction of the base of the last generally used in machines for pressing the soles of boots and shoes, and described in Letters Patent No. 7 5,428 5 and it consists, niainly,in forminga base whereon different sizes or styles of sole-molding top pieces may be fitted so that the whole may be capable of resisting the immense pressare of such a machine, while provision is made for exchanging one top piece for another.

I am aware that lasts having a stem on which a changeable top last is supported are described in Letters Patent No. 283,587. These lasts may be inverted, and have no such base as is necessary to enable my improved last to perform its functions. The base of my im proved last is so made that it cannot be converted to the purposes of molding a sole, as described in said patent.

In carrying out my invention it is necessary to construct a base the under surface of which shall rest firmly and squarely on the plate on (No model.)

which it is held in a beating-out machines of such thickness as shall give adequate s1 port to the column on which the molding 1 piece is to be fixed. The upper portion the base projects forwarchand is providedw a rib or groove on which lasts with a gro or rib may be fitted. I prefer to dovetail 1 connections between the lasts and their b and to form the upper surface of the base 2 rib at an angle of about ten degrees with lowest.

When the last described in said Letters I out No. 75,468 is used, six sizes are requi: to meet the ordinary differences in the si of shoes, and also as many as are equal the various styles of soles. Thus an inc venient weight of material accumulates the shop of the manufacturer, who is grea relieved by being able to use the same b for any last. There are about two inches the variation of different sizes from the sin est to the largest-sized last like that used a beating-out machine; hence the rib or gro may be of a length to fit the correspond parts of the smallest last, inasmuch as heel part of the larger size may project fr the rear of the base without injury, the c tor of pressure being at a point near the b1 part of the ball of the sole. Obviously rib or grooves may be supplemented n blocks in an obvious way, in order to ad the base to the larger sizes without leav them to project as suggested.

I do not claim an invertible last; nor 6 claim the combination of two lasts by me of a mortise-and-tenon connection.

'What I claim is- A last-supporting base or standard for tachment to a beatingout machine, havin last-supporting surface provided with a gro or tenon adapted to receive lasts of differ sizes or styles, and having a bottom flat face, substantially as set forth.
