NITED STATES PATENT @Enron GEORGE C. PAYNE, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
GRIPPING lMPLElVl ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,017, dated June 2, 1885.
Application filed March 24, 1885. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE C. PAYNE, a citizen oi' the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a Certain new and useful Improvement in Gripping Implements, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to gripping implements in which the jaws are operated by means of two pivoted levers; and the object of my improvement is to cause the jaws to maintain a position parallel to each other, or approximately so, throughout their range of movement. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whioh- Figure l is a plan View of the implement, the full lines representing the position of the parts when the jaws are closed, and the dotted lines the position when the jaws are opened. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the slots in the jaws and handles and the manner in which the parts are joined.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughont both views. f
The levers A D'l and A D are pivoted at E, and the outer ends of their shorter arms are pivoted at F F in a pair of jaws, B B. These jaws, which may be of any convenient design, are prolonged toward the long arms or lever-handles D D', and connected by pins G G with the guiding-links C C',
these guiding-links being pivoted in the slots of the lever-handles D D by the pins H H.
The guiding-links C C are of sueh lengths and u connected with the prolonged jaws B B and the lever-handles D Dl at such points that upon opening the jaws the outward movement of the lever-handles D D at the points where the guiding-links are pivoted on the handles, combined with the outward movement of the guidinglinks O C at the points where they are pivoted to 'the prolonged jaws, will be equivalent to the outward movement of the short arms A A at the pivotal points F F.
I am aware that gripping implements have been made in which, by asuitahle combination of levers, the jaws are made to maintain a parallel movement. This, therefore, I do not Claim, broadly; but
That I do olaim is- In a gripping implement, the combination of the two levers A D and A D, pivoted together, the slotted gripping-jaws B B', pivoted to the outer extremities of the shorter arms A A of the levers, and the links O C', pivoted to the rear ends of the gripping-jaws and pivoted in the slots of the longer lever arms or handles, the combination operating to keep the faces oi' the jaws parallel.
