Description
(No Model.)
F. L. BUCHANAN.
SPEED TROUGH.
Patented May 19 WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT O FICE.
FRANK L. BUCHANAN, OF HOWARD, OHIO.
FEED-TROUGH.
SPECIFIGATION forming; part of Letters Patent No. 318,349, dated May 19, 1885.
Application filed February 3, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK L. BUCHANAN, a citizen of the United States, and aresidentof Howard, in the county of Knox and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Troughs and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved feeding-trongh in its position for use. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the trough reversed and locked in its reversed position. as when not in use; and Fig. 8 is a side'elevation showing the-1atch or locking device released from the trough.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to devices for feeding sheep and other stock; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts of the reversible feeding-trough,which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A A are two posts or uprights, between which the trough (shown at B) is pivoted endwise in such a manner that the trough may be readily rotated upon its pivots orjournalsone of which is shown at O. The diverging legs D of the posts or uprights A are braced by cross-pieces or braces E on the inside, connecting which is a longitudinal bar or brace, F. The upper ends of the posts A A are similarly connected by an upper bar or brace, G, at such a distance above the trough that it will prevent sheep or other stock from jumping over the latter.
I prefer to make a trough of a triangular Shape in cross-section; but the end pieces, B, should be square or rectangular, so as to fit the lower end of the latch H, which is hinged upon one end of the upper bar, G.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the manner of using this device will readily be understood without requiring extended explanation. When the trough is in the position shown in Fig. 1, ready for feeding the stock, it is prevented from tilting by the lower part of the hinged latch H bearing against the rectangular end piece, B, at the corresponding end of the trough; but when the trough is not in use it is reversed to the position shown in Fig. 2, in which position it is held by the latch H bearing against the opposite side of the rectangular end piece, B. WVhen the trough is in this position, it cannot collect water, dirt, or droppings, but will be kept clean until it is desired for use.
Having thus described inyinvention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination, in a feeding-trough for animals, of the frame, the reversible trough pivoted endwise between the end posts of the frame, the longitudinal bar connecting the end posts above the trough, and the latch hinged upon one end of said bar and adapted to interlock with its lower end against one of the end pieces of thetrough, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK L. BUCHANAN.
