SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,835, dated May 12, 1885.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BARNARD W. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hubbard, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Feeders and Regulators for Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will IO enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference belng had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a front view of my improved automatic feeder and regulator for lamps; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, taken partly in section for the purpose of illustrating my invention more clearly.
The same letters refer to the same parts in both the figures.
This invention relates to lamps for street and house illumination and for other purposes; and it has for its object to provide an im- 2 5 proved feeding and regulating device for controlling and regulating the flow of oil from a suitable supply-tank to the burner in such a manner that the oil shall at all times be forced well up to the wick, and insuring asteady and brilliant light.
My invention, with these ends in view, consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out 3 5 in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annnexed, A designates an annular vessel or receptacle, which I designate the float-chamber, and which receives the oil from the supply-tank, and from 40 whence it is conveyed to the burner.
B designates the tube connected to the bottom of the float-chamber, through which the oil is fed from the supply-tank, (which is not shown in the drawings, but which should be located at a higher elevation than the burner,

which the oil is fed from the latter to the burner-tube D. The'latter is located centrally in the opening of the annular receptacle A, with which it is connected by the tube 0, and by the perforated diaphragms E E.
The burner, which may be of any suitable construction,is in the drawings shown provided with wick-tube F for an annular wick, G, air being supplied for the interior of the flame through the said wick-tube, which is tubular, as shown. Holders H H for the chimney I are secured to the annular float-chamber, as shown.
The supply-pipe B is provided with a regulating-cock, J, which is operated by means of a lever, K, upon the rear end or arm of which (which is screw-threaded, as shown) a counter- 6 5 weight, L, is adjustable. The front arm of lever K has a cross bar or shaft, M, the ends of which are provided with bearings for the vertically-adjustable rods N N, which extend upwardly through tubes O O, fitted vertically in opposite sides of the float-chamber. The latter is provided with annular openings 1? P, surrounding the upper ends of the said tubes, for the purpose of admitting the inverted cups Q Q, which are secured upon the upper ends of the rods N, and which are provided at their lower ends with annular floats R R, which are sustained by the oil contained in the chamber A.
The operation of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. When oil enters the floatchamber A from the supply-tank, it raises the floats R, consequently elevating the front end 8 5 of the lever K, whereby the cock J is partly or entirely closed, thus regulating or checking the supply of oil. When the oil in the chamber A falls below a certain level, the floats descend, thereby opening the supply cook, 0 and causing an increased supply of oil to enter the float-chamber. The rods N and the The general construction of the device is simple and inexpensive, and the regulating device for the oil-supply is absolutely automatic in its action.
It is a matter of course that any desired 5 number of lamps or burners may be fed from a single supply-tank, and that the latter may be located in any suitable position, provided that it. is above the level of the burners.
It is obvious that numerous changes in the construction of details might be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention. I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein shown.
I 5 Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In an automatic lamp feeder and regulator, the combination of a burner, an annular float-chamber surrounding the same, a feed and a supply pipe, a stop-cock arranged in the said supply-pipe,and having an operatinglever provided with an adjustable counterpoise at its rear end, a cross bar or shaft at the front end of said operating-lever, provided at its ends with vertically-adjustable rods eX- tending upwardly through tubes fitted in 0pposite sides of the float-chamber, and inverted cups at the upper ends of the said rods, extending into the float-chamber, and provided at their lower ends with annular floats, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the annular float chamber having the chimney holders, the burner arranged in the central opening of the 3 5 said chamber and connected therewith by the feed-tube and by perforated diaphragms, a supply-pipe entering the bottom of the said float-chamber, and mechanism, substantially as described, for regulating the admission of oil into the latter, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
