SPECIFICATION forming part oi Letters Patent No. 317,257, dated May 5, 1885.

T all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, ORA S. WILLETT and J oHN W. FITZGERALD, both residents of Bronson, in the county of Bourbon and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Bowers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a plan view of our improved check-rower. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the brackets carrying the guide-pulleys and forming the bearings for the transverse operatingshaft. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the mechanism for conveying motion from the operatingshaft to the seed-slide. Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the tappet -wheels detached, and

This invention relates to check-row cornplanters; and it has for its object to produce a device which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, inexpensiveness, and general efficiency.
With these ends in view the invention consists in -the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A designates the frame of a corn-planter embodying our invention. In the general construction of the said frame no novelty is herein claimed, it being understood that it is tobe supported in the usual manner upon transporting-wheels of proper construction, and provided with seeding mechanism of anyldesired description, of which B B designate the seed-boxes, and G y the seed-slide, which latter is capable of a transverse reciprocating motion. y
D D designate a pair of curved brackets, the ends of the arms E E of which are provided with vertical grooved guide-pulleys F F, for the purpose of guiding the tappet-wire,
as will be presently described.
The said brackets are provided with holes or slots G, to receive the screws or bolts H, by means of which they are adj ustably secured to the outer sides of the seed-boxes, as shown. The brack-` ets D are provided with upwardly-extending boxes or bearings I, for the transverse operatingshaft J, which is fitted to revolve in the said bearings transversely over the seed-boxes.
The shaft J is provided with a crank, K, connected by a pitman, L, with one end of a bellcrank lever, M, which is pivoted to an arm, N, secured to a cross-piece, O, between the seedboxes. The fulcrum-pin P of the bell-crank lever M is vertically adjustable in any one of a series of perforations in the arm N, for the purpose of regulating the stroke. The lower end or arm of the bell-crank lever is suitably connected with the seed-slide, to which a reciprocating motion may thus be imparted.
Q Q designate the tappet-wheels,which are secured upon the ends of the shaft J, and which consist of circumferentiallygrooved metallic disks having notches R, of suitable shape, to engage the tappets S of the wire T. The latter in practice passes under the guidepulleys and over the tappet-wheehwhich latter is thus intermittingly revolved when the machine passes over the ield, thus commucating a transverse reciprocating motion to the seed-slide through the medium of the operating crank-shaft, upon which the said tappet-wheels are secured, as described.
U is an arm or bracket secured to the rear part of the frame of the machine, and provided at its rear end with a horizontal pivoted bar, V, the ends of which are provided with horizontal grooved guide-pulleys W W, for the purpose of conveying or guiding the tappet-wire from one side of the machine to in the body of the post, and having atits outer end a loop, E, to which the end of the tappet-wire may be conveniently attached. The operation of this post will be readily understood. It can be easily driven into the ground, and it forms a firm and at the same time an elastic attachment for the tappet- Wire, which latter is thus held securely in position for operation, while at the same time it is held flexibly and yieldingly, so that there shall be no danger of its breaking.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of our invention will be readily understood. It is simple in construction, inexpensive, durable, and easily applied for operation to corn-planters of ordinary construction in which the seeding is effected by means of a transversely-reciprocating feed-slide.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a check-rower, the combination of the frame, the transverse crank-shaft, mechanism for conveying motion from the latter to the seed-slide,tappet-wheels upon the ends of the said shaft,whereby it is adapted to receive an intermitting rotary motion, and a bar pivoted to the rear end of the frame and provided at its ends with horizontal guide-pulleys, substantially as and for the purpose set set forth.
2. The anchor-post constructed of a strip or bar of elastic metal pointed at its lower end, and having` its upper end. bent into a loop, to the end of which is attached a rod passing through a perforation in the body of the post and terminating in a loop or hook, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
