SHAWL-STRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,212, dated May 5, 1885.
Application filed March 8, 1885. (No model To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MAX RUBIN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shawl-Straps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to certain im' provements in shawl-straps of that class in which an axially-turning handle supported by standards of a main bar winds up looped straps that are attached to the ends of said handle and guided in slots of said bar, the improvements being designed with a view to facilitate the rigid locking of the handle to the standards and the releasing of the same for adjusting the straps, and the invention consists of ashawl-strap bar having standards for supporting the end shanks of an axiallyturning handle. Along one of the standards of the bar is guided a slotted slide-plate that engages a square portion of one of the shanks of the handle, so as to lock the latter rigidly in position until the slide-plate is released from the square portion, when the handle is free to be turned for winding or unwinding the looped straps.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved shawl-strap with my improved locking device for the handle. Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical transverse sections on the line m m, Fig. 1, showing the locking device respectively in lowered and raised position; and Fig. i is a vertical transverse section of the shawl-strap, showing a modified form of the locking device.

A in the drawings represents the support ing-bar of my improved shawl-strap,which is provided at its ends with standards B B, that are bent at right angles thereto, and arranged with U shaped guards B. The guards B form the bearings for the end shanks, b I), of the axially-turning handle 0. Looped straps D are attached in any suitable manner to the end shanks, b b, of the handle, and passed through guide-slots of the bar A, the loops being provided at the ends with stop-rings d d, that prevent the escape of the looped straps through the slots of the bar, as customary in reference indicate correshawl-straps of this class. A slotted slide plate, E, is guided bya headed pin, e, on one of the standards B, or on one of the guards B,
the slot 6 being wider at its middle part and u round at its lower part, so as to move along the shank b and permit the turning of the same when the shank b arrives at the lower round end of the slot 6. The shank b is either made of square shape, as shown in Fig. 4, so as to be locked by the contracted middle portion of the slote when the slide-plate E is moved downward, or the shank b may be pro vided with a square piece, f, the corners of which project beyond the end of the handle 0, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The piece f is engaged by bent-up flanges c of the slide-plate E, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, which flanges lock the handle 0 to the standard B when the slide-plate E is moved down, as shown in Fig. 2. The slide-plate E is provided with bent upper and lower ends 9 9, that serve as fingerrests in raising or lowering the slide-plate E. On raising the slide-plate E the side flanges, 6*, release the square portion f and permit the turning of the handle 0 and the unwinding of the straps D. \Vhen the straps haie been applied to the parcel to be carried, the slide-plate is pushed down, so that the side flanges, e engage the square'piece f, in which position they lock the handle and straps in position, as described. The slide-plate E is slightly curved at the lower part, so that its lower end exerts a binding action upon the arm B or guard B when the slide-plate is raised, so as to prevent by the friction therewith any change in the position of the slideplate until the same is lowered again for looking the handle.
The locking attachment of the handle is easily operated, is not liable to get out of order, and is more reliable than the pawl-andratchet mechanism by which the handles of shawl-straps of this class have been locked heretofore.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1.
