DELIVERY APPARATUS FOR PRINTING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,218, dated May 5, 1885.

To all whom it may cancer/1 Beitknown that I, WALTERSooTT, of Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Delivery Apparatus for Printing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a fly-frame for moving the grippers that receive the sheet as delivered from the impression or transfer cylinder and deliver the same upon a table.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation, partially in section,representing the fly-frame and grippers and their actuating devices. Fig. 2 is a detached elevation of the fly-frame at one side. Fig. 3 shows the grippers in the position they assu me when delivering the sheet upon the table. Fig. 4 shows the gripper when about to take the sheet from the impression or transfer cylinder. Fig. 5 is an elevation at one side of the upper part of the fly-frame and of the parts carried by it.
The impression-cylinderB is adapted to receive the sheet from the feed-board d or other source of supply. The printingsurface may be a cylinder or the form A upon a reciprocating bed, and a transfer-cylinder, C, may be used between the impression-cylinder and the de1ivery-fiy, or else the sheet may be taken directly from the impression-cylinder. Where the impression-cylinder makes two revolutions to each impression, or whereit makes one revolntion as the types move beneath it and remains stationary during the return movement of the bed, the sheet maybe taken off the front of the impression-cylinder and laid with the printed side uppermost upon the delivery-table d, (shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1,) the fly-frame and delivery-grippers and actuating devices, hereinafter described, being available for use with the delivery-table in this position, or when they are beneath the feed-table, as shown by full lines, for taking the sheet from the impression or transfer cylinder.
In order to take the sheet when printed, I make use of the fly-frame B, composed of two arms upon the rock-shaft 1', such arms being far enough apart to allow the sheet to swing between them as held by the grippers s s. The grippers s are hung from the rock-shaft t, and each gripper is in the form of a bent arm, and through the arms 3 on the shaftt passes the shaft t, that carries the gripperfingers s, and at the end of the shaft t is a crank or wrist, 3, and upon the fly-frame It is a stationary cam, 4. \Vhen the shaft t and grippers are swung into the position shown in Fig. 4, the cam 4 opens the grippers to receive the sheet. The moment the shaft t is turned in the direction in which the sheet is moving when passing into the grippers the cam 4 allows the grippers to be closed by aspring, 5, and hold the sheet, and when the fly-frame has been swung down into proximity to the delivery-table d the grippers are opened. by the shaft 15 receiving suflicientof a turning motion to bring the crank-arm at the end of I the shaftt into contact with the other part of the cam 4 and open the grippers and discharge the sheet. I give to the fly-frame R a swing ing motion by a crank-pin, 6, on the wheel I) or eccentric, and rod 6, connected with the flyframe or with a crank-arm, 6, upon the rockshaft 1', so that the fly-frame will be brought up into position for the grippers to receive the sheet at the proper time, and such sheet will be carried by the fly-frame and grippers and laid down upon the table.
To prevent thesheet sliding down the in clined table and blurring theimpression,I provide a foot-board, h, that is connected to the table by slotted angle-irons and clampingscrews It, so as to be placed in the proper position, according','to the length of the sheet, for the end ofthe sheet to be supported by the footboard as the sheet is dropped from the grippers. V
In order to turn the rockshaft t of the grippers at the proper time for opening the grippcrs and allowing them to close, I provide a pinion, 10, on the rock-shaft t, a rack, 11, gearing into the same, a rod, 12, in slides on the fly-frame, a rack, 18, at the other end, and a pinion or wheel, 14, loose upon the rockshaft 1', and to this wheel 14 motion is given at the proper time by a cam, o, upon the shaft A, acting upon a slide-rod, 19, and rack 13, supported by a roller or by a guide. I have shown a supporting-guide, 17. The rack 13 is preferably placed so as to act directly upon the gear 14, and the cam 'v is shaped so that it ICO moves the racks and pinions to turn the shaft t and grippers and allow the grippers to close as the edge of the sheet passes into them, then to swing the grippers with the sheet as the fly-frame moves, and to continue the swinging movement of the grippers with the rock-shaft until the stationary cam opens the grippers and delivers the sheet upon the table.
If desired, the sheets are guided accurately to place one above the other upon the deliverytable by the side and end boards, h h, each of which is perpendicular to the table at the portion which is adjacent to such table, and at an inclination thereto in the upper part, so that the sheet sliding down the incline as delivered is brought to place between the vertical faces of the side and end boards. In Fig. 1 only a portion of the delivery-table is sh own.
The fly-frame and rock-shaft, when placed for delivering the sheets from the front side of the impression-cylinder, may be located as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, or in any other desired position, so as to deliver the sheets upon an inclined table or upon a level table, as indicated by the dotted lines.
In order to cause the sheet to be properly laid upon the delivery-table after it is taken from the impression-cylinder, I make use of the delivery-cylinder O and the fly-frame R, with grippers at the outer end to receive the advancing end of the sheet and convey the same outwardly and downwardly to the table, and an air-pipe with jets, beneath which the sheet is drawn by the fly and grippers so as to force the back end of the sheet down upon the table.
The gear-wheels b b b serve to connect the impression-cylinder B with the shaft A, so that the two will revolve in unison, and it is necessary that the shaft A shall revolve once for each two revolutions of the impressioncylinder, so that the fly-frame may take off each sheet as printed.
I do not limit myself to the precise construction of the grippers and their rock-shaft, as these may be varied.
In my improved press the impression-cylinder or the delivery-cylinder becomes a revolving sheet-carrier with grippers or other sheet-retaining mechanism,and I remark that the counterpoise 0 may be variable, so as to lessen concussion and cause the swinging flyframe to move with uniformity.
I do not herein claim a fly-frame with a cross-shaft carrying gripper-fingers,and asec- 0nd shaft with grippers, as the same is set forth in my application filed December 28, 1883, Serial No. 115,823.
I claim as my invention- 1. The fly-frame and its rock-shaft, in combination with grippers, a rock-shaft at the outer end of the fly-frame carrying such grippers, a stationary cam for opening or closing the grippers, and a positive-motion mechanism, substantially as specified, for swinging the fly-frame and grippers, and mechanism, substantially as specified,for opening the grippers by contact with the stationary cam, and a spring to close such grippers, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the fly frame and grippers for delivering the sheet, of a pinion at the axis of the fiy-frame, a rack and cam to move the same, and a rack upon the flyframe, receiving motion from the pinion and acting to move the grippers for opening and closing the same, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the fly-frame and grippers, of a crank and connecting rod for giving motion to the fly-frame, the rack 13, pinion 14, and a rack on the fly-frame and pinion 10 on the gripper rock-shaft, and cams for giving motion to the parts, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with the delivery-cylinder G, of a fly-frame, R, and grippers at the outer end thereof to receive the advancing end of the sheet and convey the same outwardly and downwardly to the distant end of the delivery-table,and an air-pipe with jets, beneath which the sheet is drawn by the fly and grip pers, whereby said air-j ets force the back end of the sheet down upon the table, substantially as specified.
