QUIN E. BOHANNON, OF LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.
CORN SHELLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,728, dated April 28, 1885.
Application filed April 7, 1884. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, QUIN E. BOHANNON, a
citizen of the United States of America, residmy invention.
ing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Corn-Shellers; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to cornshellers; and it consists in theimprovements hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is aside view of a cornsheller constructed in accordance with Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section, and Fig. 4: is a plan.
In a frame composed of standards and cross bars A B is supported, in journals a, a shaft, 0, upon which is mounted a crown-wheeLD, upon one face of which are located gear-teeth b, while the other face is provided with a seriesof spurs, c.
In journals (1, secured on the top side bars, B, of the frame, turns a shaft, E, which has keyed thereon a pinion, e, which gears with the teeth I) of the crown-wheel D. Adisk, F, is also keyed on the shaft E, and is located so that a series of peripheral blades, f, thereon will successively come above the serrated end a of a blade, G, which extends from theinner lowerend of aninclined hopper, H. Aeurved spring, I, secured at one end to the upper edge of the hopper H, is extended so as to hear at its other end against the under side of the blade G, so as to afford aspring-support for the same.
A bracket, J, secured to the frame beneath the spring I, is perforated for the passage of a tliumb screw, t',which bears against the under side of said spring I and regulates the pressure with which it supports the blade G. A portion of the said bracket J is preferably inclined to permitthe said screw 2' to bear against the spring I at the proper angle.
K is a curved trough composed of a metallic section or sections bent in the form of a concave, and extending from the rear upper side to an opening formed in the front of the frame below the spring I. The trough K is provided with a series of perforations, j,which form asieve at thelowest portion of the trough.
On one end of the shaft 0 is a crank-handle, L, while a balance-wheel, M, is located on the opposite side of the machine on the end of the shaft E.
. The operation of the invention is as follows:
The cars of corn are fed through the hopper H, and, passing onto the blade G, are wedged between the serrated portion of said blade and the bladesfof the disk F.
By revolving the crownwvheel l) by means of the crank-handle L, and imparting motion to the disk F, so that the same will revolve in the direction indicated by the arrow, Fig. l, the bladesf not only move the car over the serrated portion of the blade G, so as to remove the corn from the underside of said ear, but
said blades, in conjunction with the spurs on the wheel D, remove the grain from the entire ear. The loose corn and cobs drop into the concaved trough K, beneath, and the corn passes through the perforations therein to any suitable receptacle, while the cobs are crowded (113 of the opening at the end of the trough at the front of the machine. I am aware of the construction set forth and illustrated in the patent of Adams,No.l7 9,250, of June 27, 1876,and I do not therefore claim, broadly, any features set forth in said patent.
I claimv A corn-sheller comprising a feed-hopper, a toothed disk, and a bladed wheel, arranged substantially as described and shown,a springblade extending from the lower portion of the feed-hopper and provided with the serrated end portion, a device for varying the tension of said spring-b1ade, and a curved metallic trough, perforated as specified, inclined toward its front and communicating with a discharge-opening for the cobs, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
QUIN n. EOHANNON.
