Description

(No ModeL) I. H.` RANDALL.
CAR SPRING.
No. 815,834. Patented Apr. 14, 1885.
lINITED Srafrns Parana Ormes.
ISAAC H. RANDALL, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
CAR-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,834, dated April 14, 1885.
Application led February 2, 1885. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern.:
Be it known that I, Isaac H. RANDALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State ofMassachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement. in Oar-Springs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide within an exterior coiled spring an interior coiled spring which will come into action when there is a sufficiently heavy load on the car, and which will be constantly compressed to keep the samein placel and prevent any rattling thereby.
My invention consists in an interior coiled spring within an exterior coiled spring, which will be compressed by means of a collar on the central spindle or bolt, as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure l is a central vertical section of a device embodying my invention, showing the interior spring and the collar in full. Fig. 2 shows a section ofthe collar and interior spring as well as oi' the exterior spring.
The portion of sill A, brace-rod a, and seat B, joined with the box, are those oi an ordinary l1orse-car- The cap or plate O is under the sill. There is au exterior coiled spring, D, between the cap and a block, E, and a rubber spring, F, between the block E and seat B. The central spindle or bolt, G, has a shoulder at b to bear against the cap C, a nut, c, to screw on the spindle or bolt against the sill A, and which holds the shoulder b against the cap O, and a nut, d, to screw on the lower end of the spindle or bolt under the brace ct. On the spindle or bolt I form a shoulder, e, above which is a collar, H, fitted to and adapt ed to slide on that part of the spindleor bolt above the shoulder e. This shoulder is at the required place on the spindle or bolt to keep the collar at a suitable distance above the blocl; E when the exterior spring, D, is not compressed. Between the collar H and cap C is placed a coiled spring, I, of such length that when the spindle or bolt is held in place with reference to the cap O by means of the nut c this spring is compressed somewhat, so that it is securely held and no rattling can be caused thereby.
I prefer to form the shoulder e of the spindle or bolt G by means of a tube, f, which is put on the central part of the spindle or bolt, and
is prevented from sliding` downward thereon by the nut d and brace c, thus becoming practically a part of the spindle or bolt.
In operation, when there is a load on the Car sufliciently great to compress the spring D, so that the colla-r H'bears ou the block E, the spring I will come into action and aid in supporting the load.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination of the cap and plate O, two coiled springs, one within the other, and of different lengths, a central spindle or bolt, G, provided with a screw-thread on each end and a shoulder, c, a collar, H, above said shoulder, and a bearing, E, moving freely on said spindle or bolt, and supporting the outer spring, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a compound graduated spring, a central spindle or bolt provided with a shoulder, c, formed by a tube fastened rigidly on a central rod, and providing a stop for the lower end of the interior spring, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of a graduated compound spring composed of coiled springs of different lengths and diameters and independent movable bea-rings for their bases, with a rubber spring, F, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of the cap and plate O, two coiled springs, D and I, one within the other, and bearing, as to their upper ends, against said cap, a central spindle or bolt, G, having a shoulder, e, as a stop for the bearing for the base of the inner spring, an intermediate block, E, moving freely on said spindle or bolt and forming a bearing for the base of the outer spring, a rubber spring, F, box-seat B, and brace-rod a, substantially as specied.
