JOHN KREHBIEL, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE GLOBE CAPSULE COMPANY, OF SAME PLAGE.
CAPSULE-MACHINE.
' SPECIFICATION forming part ci Letters Patent No. 315,415, dated April 7, 1885.
Application filed December 12, 1883. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN KREHBIEL, of -Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Capsule-Fitting Machines;v and I do hereby declare tta the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to the construction of a device by means'of which cylindrical caps may be automatically placed upon cylindrical capsules.' In the manufacture of gelatine capsules the body of these are made of a certain external diameter in the form of cylinders, with one end closed and the other open, and the cap is formed in the same manner, the internal diameter of which is of sufficient size to allow it to be placed over andsleeved upon the open end of thebody; and the object of my invention is to construct a simple device by means of which, the bodies and caps being suitably fed thereto, the device will automatically, accurately, and without marring the same insert the open end of the body into the open end of the cap and discharge the finished capsule.
The invention consists in the construction of such a machine, and also in the peculiar construction of its parts, as more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
I do not desire to confine myself to the particular construction shown and described in this specication, for it maybe modified without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Figure 1 is a plan view showing the position of the parts when left by the discharge of the finished capsule. Fig. 2 is a like view showing the device ready to receive the body and cap. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the jaws.
Fig. 4 is a plan view on an enlarged scale, with a portion of the guide removed, showing the position of the parts just before the finished' capsule is discharged.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a suitable bed or table which supports the working mechanism.
, B is a hollow guide through which the plunger C reciprocates.
D is a slide having a transverse reciprocat.
ing motion in a recess, E, in the face of the l table.
F is one of the jaws which is secured to the with the plunger, such bore being the size of the body of the capsule to be operated upon. This bore is enlarged at one end by so much as the increased diameter of the cap-that `is to say, the smaller and longer portion of the bore is of sufficient size to loosely grasp the f body of the capsule, and the larger and shorter port-ion of the boreis of sufficient size to grasp y the capand the parts are so arranged that ,j
, when the movable part is closed upon the fixed part of the jaw the bore is in axial line with the plunger, which passes through the guide B.
H is the discharge-opening through the tableinto which the ejected and finished capsule is thrown. A
I-is a slide having a horizontal reciprocating motion in the same direction with that of the plunger, and runs in suitable guides. To the exposed end of the plunger is secured an arm, K, in such manner that such arm will reciprocate with the like motion of the plunger.V the slide, and through another guide, M, on the table, and is curved, as shown, so that in the forward motion of the plunger the arm acting upon the guide L closes the part G of the jaw upon its fellow, and when such plun-` ger is retracted, as shown in Fig. 2, the curvature of the arm, acting upon the same guide, A
forces the part G of the jaws from the part F, as shown in Fig. 2. The free end of this armlis so arranged as to engage with the slide I when the plunger is retracted, as shown in Fig. 2,
and thereby draw such slide against the end of the jaws, and when the plunger isprojected t0 force such slide in the same direction, as shown in Fig. l, uncovering the opening through which the capsules are ejected from the machine.
It win be noticed that the slide r forms the Ico i This arm passes through a guide, L, `on
point of resistance at the end of the jaws until the plunger has acted to force the cap and body into conjunction, and does not commence its rearward reciprocating motion until this is done, when the continued projection of the plunger engages the free end of the arm K with the slide and projects it to the rear to disclose the opening in the table.
In practice, by any suitable mechanism, (for which subsequent applications for patents will be inade,) the bodies of the capsules are placed within the jaws in the smaller diameter of the bore thereof, and simultaneously with this the cap is delivered in the larger diameter of the bore, the open ends of each (the cap and the body) being presented toward each other. The arm and plunger are then projected until the curvature of the arm, operating upon the slide, closes the two parts of the jaws together, thereby compelling the body and cap of the capsule into the saine axial line. rlhe further projection of the plunger and arm brings the end of the plunger against the closed end of either the cap or the body, as the jaws may be arranged for that purpose, and forces the open end o f the body to enter the open end of the cap, as shown in Fig. 4, the slide I affording a rel sistancc to the opposite end to compel such junction. In the further progression of the plunger and the arin the former forces the iiished capsule from the jaws and ejects it through the opening in the table, and simultaneous with this the free end of the arm engages with the slide and forces it to the rearward, disclosing the opening through which the iinished capsule is discharged.
Vhat I claim as my invention isl. In a machine for the purpose of placing a cap upon a capsule-body, the two-part adjustable jaw having an enlarged portion for holding said cap in line with the capsule, and a reciprocating plunger constructed to compel the open end of said capsule to enter the open end ol' the cap, substantially as set forth.
2. A two-part adjustable jaw provided with a central bore, such bore being enlarged at a portion thereof, and the sliding cam K, for opening and closing thejaw and moving a slide at one end, and provided with the plunger C, to compel the joining of the cap to the body oi' the capsule, substantially as described.
3. In a device forthe purposes described, and in combination, the fixed half of a jaw projecting over a slide which has a reciproeating motion and to which is secured the movable half of the jaw, suchjaw being provided with suitable mechanism, substantially as specified, for opening and closing suchjaws, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. In a machine for the purposes described, and in combinatioma fixed half of ajaw pro jcctingover a slide to which is secured the movable half of thejaw, such slide being provided with mechanism to give it the necessary reciprocating motion, a guide the bore of which is in axial line with the bore of the jaw when the two parts thereof are brought together, and a plunger reciprocating between the two parts ot' the jaw, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
5. In aniachine for the purposes described, and in combination with thetwo-partjaw,the plunger and arm and slide, such arm being adapted to reciprocate in one direction aslide upon which the movable part of the jaw is secured, and to give a reciprocating motion in the opposite direction to the slide which forms a point of resistance at the end of thejaw, and in its reciprocation to close or disclose the discharge-opening through the bed of the inachine, the parts being constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purposes specified.
6. A device for the purposes described, consisting of the bed A, guide B, attached to said bed, plunger C, working through said guide, slide D,working on the bed, two-part jaw F G, one part being fixed to the bed and the other to theslide D, and the slide I, operated by the curved arm K, the parts being constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
