Description

UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
LEONHARD NAX, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA- TOBACCO- PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,321, dated April 7, 1885.
Application filrd October 9, 1884. (No model.)
T0 on whom it 12mg concern.-
Be it known that I, LEONHARD NAX, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tobacco-Pipes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a front view of a tobaccopipe embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a partial vertical section and partial side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in theseveral figures.
My invention consists of a tobacco pipe having a bowl formed of sections and provided with a perforated diaphragm secured to the upper section and a plate secured to the lower section, said diaphragm and plate being connected by a hinge, the advantages whereof being hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the bowl of the pipe, and B the stem thereof. The bowl is horizontally divided, forming sections a a, which arehinged together, as at b, where by the upper section may be opened, thus uncovering the lower section, and pei mitting the removal of the nicotine and collections in the bottom of the bowl, and the cleansing of the same.
To the lower end of the upper section, a, is secured a perforated diaphragm, O, which supports the tobacco. and admits of the passage of air. from the top of the bowl to the stem, and consequently to the mouth of the smoker, it being seen that nicotine, pieces of tobacco, and ashes which escape through the perforations of the diaphragm enter the low- 0 or section, a, and so reach the bottom of the bowl.
Rising from the diaphragm O is a flange, c,
which projects into the upper section, enters a recess, (1, on the inner face thereof, and extends above the bottom edge of said sect-ion,
said flange acting as a rim or guard for preventing nicotine formed on the diaphragm esi f thereof. It will be seen that the rim c encircles the sides of the dishing part of the diaphragm, thus closing the joint between the same, and preventing entrance of air to the bowl from the side thereof between the joint of the upper and lower sections of the bowl, and also preventing the entrance of air to the bowl between the facing-plate f and the top of the lower section thereof.
gral, respectively, with the rim of the diaphragm C and plate f. The fastening-catch g is formed with the rim of the diaphragm G,
and the engaging part h thereof is formed' with the plate f.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters i Patent, is
A tobaccopipe'having a upper and lower sections, the upper section having a perforated diaphragm secured thereto and projecting into said lower section, and the lower section having a recessed plate secured to it, the said diaphragm and the said plate being connected bya hinge, substantiah ly as and for the purpose set forth.
