E. WOODWABD.
BUTTON FASTENING STRIP. No. 314,553. Patented Mar. 24, 1885.
'FEVzU /fz @M M707 IlNrrn Aralar ERASTUS WOODVARD, OF SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE BELLE PATENT BUTTON FASTENER COMPANY, OF KENNEBUNK, MAINE.
BUTTON-FASTENING STRIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 314,553, dated March 2%, 1885.
Application filed July 28, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERAsTUs WooDWARD, of Somerville, county ot' Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Button-Fastening Strips, of which the following description. in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings represent-ing like parts.
In my application, No. 129,551, iiled April 28, 1884, I have described a machine for setting buttons upon boots, shoes, and other articles by means ot' a fastening cut from a strip.
The object ol' this invention is to cover the button-fastening strip 'employed in the machine described in the said application.
Myinvention consists, essentially, in a bntton-fastening strip cnt from sheet metal, the said strip presenting` a series of T-shaped nails connected only by the ends of their heads, the under edge ofthe web i'rom whichthe heads are cut being provided with projections located between the Shanks ot' the fastenings and in the line in which the said web is to be cut to separate the l'astenings, the said projections entering the material at and preventing lthe fastening from twisting in the leather, and also obviating catching ot' the stocking upon the ends of the head. The upper side otl the web is also prel'erably indented for the reception ofthe prong ofthe driver and cutter.
Figure l in side elevation represents part of a button-lastening strip embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 a top view thereof.
The strip shown in Fig. l is out from sheet metal so as to leave separate shanks a, with head-forming parts b extended therefrom only in the direction of the width of the shanks, the web constituting the heads being of substantially the thickness of the shanks at their junction with the web, and being indented at its upper side, as shown at c, midway between the shanks, to thus form notches for the reception of the prongs of the combined driver and cutter-bar, and to also form projections d,
(No model.)
which, when the web is severed and the fastener is driven, enter the material at each side the shank c. Each nail is Tshaped, and the arms forming the head extend from the top of the shank at each of its two edges, or in the direction oi' the width of the shank. The sides of the shanks and heads are in the condition of the plate from which the strip was cut.
I do not broadly claim a nail-strip composed of a series of connected heads with projecting Shanks; nor Vdo I claim a nail-strip in which the shanks are connected each with the other by a thin web and wherein the heads are joined side by side instead of end to end..
I claim- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a button-fastening stripcomposed of sheet metal and presenting a series ot' shanks joined only by a web suitable to form heads t'or the Shanks, each shank having a head-forming portion projecting from each edge, the head forming web being provided with projections d, which form end portions of the head of the separated fastener adapted to enter the material when the fastener is driven, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a button-fastening strip composed of sheet metal and presenting a series ot' shanks joined only by a web suitable to form heads for the Shanks, each shank having a head-forming portion projecting from each edge, the headforming web being provided with projections d on its lower side to enter the material when the fastener is driven, the upper side of the said web having notches 0, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof Ihave signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ERASTUS VOODVARD'.
