Description

(No Model.)
` J; P. SPILGER.
GHURN.
No. 314,073. Patented Mar. 1'7, 1885.
.g1 [tardam- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
:JOHN PETER SPILGER, OF BUFFALO PRAIRIE, ILLINOIS.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.314,0'73, dated March 17, 1885. Application filed May 8, 1884. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN P. SPILGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo Prairie, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Churmof which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has vrelation to swinging churns; and it consists in the construction andr novel arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Figure l is a viewin perspective of a churn embodying myimprovements.4 Fig. 2 is aver- -tical longitudinal section on theline ma; in
' Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on the line y y in Fig. l, and Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the churn.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the rectangular frame or churn-stand provided with hand-holes B in its end rails. Transverse shafts C O traverse the frame A near each end, and upon these shafts C O are pivoted four hangers, D, which are held in place b v nuts E and washers F. At the lower ends of the hangers D are pivoted the ends ofthe lower horizontal rails, G G, of the swinging frame by bolt-rods H H, and nuts I. From the lower horizontal rails, G G, four uprights, J, extend, and they are connected at their upper ends by the side rails, K K, and the end rails, L M. The end rail L is provided with a cleat or strip, N, which forms a shoulder for the brackets O O on the bottom of the churn-body P. The end rail M of the swinging frame Q is provided with a thumb-screw, R, which engages a hole, S, in a transverse cleat, T, on the under face of the bottom of the churn -body P. In thismanner the ch urn-body is removably connected to the swinging frame Q, in order that it may be conveniently handled when it becomes necessary to clean it. vThe churn-body P is provided near each end with a handle, U. The churn-body P is in box form, and has a removable lid at its middle top portion. The dasher V consists of a rectangular board having elongated vertical slots V in it, and is held in place at the middle of the churn between vertical strips X X, secured to the side walls of the churn-body P by screws. At one end the churn-body is provided with a discharge opening or outlet, Z, for the buttermilk, which is closed byl a cork, Y. The lid X of the churn is provided with a ventilator-tube, a, and with cleatsb b on its under face, and strips c c, forming flanges on its upper face.
The operation of the churn is simple and effective. By grasping the handle at one end and raising the churnbody at that end the other end of the churn will be depressed and the cream will roll through the dasher to that end, and when the depressed end is raised the t cream will roll back again, and by continuing to tip the churn-body in this manner the butter will be made to come in a short time. The churn is cheap and simple, and is not likely to get out of order.
Having` thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. The combination, with the main frame A of the churn, of the swinging frame Q, having the end rail L, provided with the strip N, and the end rail M, provided with the thumb- 'screw R, and thechurn-body P, provided with the brackets O O, and the transverse cleat T on its bottom, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the main frame A, having the transverse shafts C C, of the pivoted hangers D, the pivoted horizontal side rails, G G, uprights J, the rails K K, and end rails L, provided with strip N, and end rail M, provided with thumb-screw R, and the'churnbody P, having brackets O O, and transverse cleat T on the under face ofits bottom, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN PETER SPILGER.
