IMPROVEMENT IN ASTRINGENT MEDICINES:

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 30,396, dated October 16, 1860.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, E. W. FERRIS, of the town of Macon, in the county of Noxubee and State of Mississippi, have invented a new combination of medicines for the cure of diarrhoea, dysentery, and other similar diseases of the bowels, 850.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact statement of the materials and its mode of preparation, reference being had to the following recipes.

To enable others skilled in the profession to make use of my combination, I will proceed to describe the mode of preparation.

it No. l.Cherry-cordia1: Bark of the wild-cherry tree, pulverized,

(Pmmus Virginiana) Eiss Bark of the wild-poplar tree, pulverized,

(Lim'odendmn tult'pzfera) giss Refined loaf-sugar gviij Pure French brandy or pure alcohol (U.

S. P.) Zviij Pure water ..Q. S.

Then to the ingredients in the percolator add the alcohol or brandy, if it can be obtained pure and good. Let this macerate for four hours, and then, with the addition of a sufficient quantity of pure water, filter enough to make apint and a half of the liquid. To the liquid add the sugar, and by a slow heatletit dissolve.

B: No. 2: Carbonate potassa 5i Spirits lavender compound (U. S. P.) Ei Spirits hartshorn (aqua-ammonia) 3i Essence peppermint 3i Tincture opium 3i Ether, sulphuric 3iss MiX.

Of the cherry-cordial, or recipe No. 1, take three parts and add one part of the recipe No. 2. Mix well together and bottle for use.

What I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of recipes No. 1 and No. 2, substantially as above stated.
