SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 302,495, dated July 22, 1884.

This invention relates to tag-fasteners; and it has for its object to provide a simple, cheap,
and efficient device of this character, which may be applied with ease to all tightly-rolled goodssuch as carpets, dry goods, and the like-which is self-fastening when applied to the goods, and to which different tags may be applied without the necessity of removing the fastener from the goods.
\Vith these and other objects in view the I said invention consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View illustrating the application of my improved tag-fastener to a roll of dry-goods. Fig. 2 is adetail perspective view of the tag-fastener detached. Fig. 8 is an enlarged view showing the tag-fastener applied to a portion of goods, and illustrating more clearly the manner in which the fastener is held in place.
The same letters refer to corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, Adesignates my improved fastener, constructed of a single piece of brass or other suitable material, the body 0 of the fastener being formed of round wire terminating at one end in a wire-coil, B, the end'of which is left open, so as to permit the insertion of the tag D. The other end of the body 0 is provided with a sharp point, E, the end of the body 'being bent inward from the point, as shown at F, at an acute angle to said point, the end of the extension F being formed with a sharp point, a.
It will be seen that the extension F of the body G forms in connection therewith a V- shaped hook, the point E of which will readily penetrate the goods to adjust the'fastener in position, and when the fastener has been properly adjusted, the hook will prevent the displacement of the fastener.

The operation of myinvention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the annexed drawings. The fastener is applied to the roll of dry-goods or carpet by forcing the point E into the goods until the point a of the hook slips over the goods, as shown in Fig. 3, the goods being held between the extension F and the body 0. The tag D is then slipped through the coil B, and this completes the adjustment of the device, It will be seen that the V- shaped hook serves to effectually hold the fastener in place, and by means of the same the device is self-fastening, since the moment the point E is passed through the goods the hook catches around the same and prevents displacement. The tag is readily slipped through the coil, and thus a new tag can be easily adjusted without removing the device from the goods.
The improved tag-fastener is simple, inexpensive, and eliicient, and may be conven' iently applied to dry-goods and carpets in rolls with ease.
I11 order to define more clearly the scope of my invention, I would have it understood that I am aware that a barbed point is old; likewise a ring to receive a tag; but I am not aware that a tag-fastener has been constructed with a V-shaped point at one end and an open ring at the other end, thus forming an improved article of manufacture.
Having described my invention, I claim-- As an improvement in tag-fasteners, the body 0, formed of round wire terminating at one end in a coil, B, the end of which is left open to permit the insertion of the tag, a sharp point, E, at the other end of the body,
and an extension, F, projecting inwardly at an acute angle to the body, the inner end of the extension being provided with a sharp point, a, as and for the purpose set forth.
