DEVICE FOR-FASTENING PAPERS, etc.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 302,053, dated July 15, 1884.

Fastening Papers and other Articles, fully described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.

My invention relates to devices for fastening papers, boxes, and other articles; and the object of said devices is to provide a metallic hook-clasp and elastic or cord attachment for securing such articles in their closed condition, whereby the fastening andunfastening thereof may be accomplished speedily and without trouble or'annoyance.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is ablank struck out froma sheet of metal. Fig. 2 is the fast ening device made from such blank bent up to show the attaching prongs and hooks. Fig. 3 is the fastening device applied in use and provided with an elastic cordor band or'strap. Fig. 4 is a blank of modified form struck out from a sheet of metal. Fig. 5 is the fastening device made from such modified blank bent up to show theattaching prongs and hooks. Fig. 6 is the fastening device made from such modified blank applied in use and provided with an elastic cord or band or strap. I

The blank in Fig. 1 or the modified form thereof in Fig. 4 may be cut from any suitable sheet of metal. The various dimensions of either form may of course be regulated as necessity or convenience may require.

The securing hook-clasp, as shown in the blank in Fig. 1, consists of a base of sheet metal, A,with notches cut therein .so as to form the projections a and b,-and the triangular points 0 and d, and the slot 6. In order to adapt this blank,constructed as above,for fastening purposes, as shown in Fig. 2, the projections a and b, Fig. 1, are bent over toward each other, formingthe hooks a and b, Fig. 2,

bent perpendicularly downward, forming the prongs c and d, Fig. 2, by which the device may be attached to the papersor other articles for which it is designed.

The. cord or band or strap with which this device or the modified form thereof is ,provided, as shown in Figs. 3 and 6, may be made of any elastic or flexible material, and maybe of a single piece with a knot or tag on one or or continuous piece.

The application of this device to papersor other articles for securing purposes, as shown the attaching-prongs c and d through the papers or other articles to be secured or some portion thereof, and then bending them toward each other and clamping them. When a single piece of cord or strap is used, the knotted or tagged end thereof is passed through the hook b, the knot or tag catching in the slot 6. The cord or strap is then passed over and around the papers or other articles to be secured, and the other end thereof is passed through the hook a,which may be clamped so as to secure thecord or strap in position.

In the modification of this device shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6, the securing hook-clasp, as shown in the blank in Fig. 4, consists of a base of sheet metal, B, with notches cut therein so as to form the triangular point h, and a slot is cut into and through the body of the metal forming the triangular point i. adapt this modified form for fastening purposes, as shown in Fig. 5, the projection f g the letter 8, so as to form the hooks f and g in Fig. 5, and the triangular points h and z in Fig. 4 are bent perpendicularly downward for the purpose of forming the prongs h and i in Fig. 5, by which the device may be attached designed. It will be obvious that the bulk of the papers or other articles to be secured is only limited by the length and elastic capacity of the cord or band or strap, and by the possibility of fastening the device by means of the attaching-prongs to such papers or other articles.

It will also be obvious that either form of the device may be applied to envelopes, boxes, books, &e., without departing from my in vention.

1. A device for fastening papers, Ste, con sisting of a base having depending fastenings or prongs upon one side, and hooks, arranged substantially as showinupon the opposite side, adapted to receive and hold a cord or band or strap, for the purpose set forth.

4. A metal fastening for papers, &c., consisting of a flat base having depending fastening-prongs upon one side and hooks upon the opposite side, substantially as described, struck out from a single piece of metal, as set forth.
