Feb. 6, 1962 E. D. GRISSOM REVERSIBLE RATCHET WRENCH Filed NOV. 20, 1959 United States Patent finite 3,0 l 9,53 l Patented Feb. 6, l 952 3,019,681 REVERSHBLE RATCHET WRENCH Everett D. Grissorn, Seiraa, Ala. (Air Force Base, San Francisco, Caiif.) Filed Nov. 20, 1959, Ser. No. 854,436 1 Claim. (Cl. 81-61.)
This invention relates to a close quarter positive action wrench. It has for its main objects to provide such a wrench that will be highly satisfactory for the purpose intended, simple in structure, comparatively cheap to manufacture, easy to use and keep in Working condition, and very durable.
In difiicult mechanical Work where a socket type wrench is required it often occurs that there is very little room for operating a wrench. The present invention is for the purpose of overcoming such trouble by providing a wrench that will require very little room for its use and operation.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the drawing and description.
By referring generally to the drawing it will be observed that FIG. 1 is a general View of a Wrench made according to this invention with cover part removed to show the internal parts. FIG. 2 is an edge view of the entire wrench. FIG. 3 is an enlarged detail view showing the main working parts of the wrench.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the wrench comprises a case part 1 with an integral handle and a cover 2 bolted on, and having an operating part with integral handle 3. Two square work engaging lugs 4 and 5 integral with a round ratchet head 6 provided with teeth 7 is mounted in holes through the case bottom and cover. A curved part 8 is held between the case bottom and cover and has an integral pawl 9 of a size to fit into the teeth on the ratchet head, and having a slot 10 in its other end. It is additionally held in place for use by connection to a spring 11 having one end thereof attached to the curved part with the other spring end attached at 12 in the side wall of the case. The handle 3 has a neck-down end extension 13 that fits in the slot in the curved part 8. The handle 3 is mounted on a stud 14 that is inserted tightly in holes through the case bottom and cover. A spring 15 is attached at one end 16 in the case at 17 with its other end attached to the handle head portion at 18 with the spring mounted in contracting tension to cause the outer ends of the handles to remain apart when not pulled together by manual means. A pawl 19 is mounted with one end 20 in contact with the case at 21 with its other end 22 in movable contact with the teeth on the ratchet head. A spring 23 is set in expanding tension to hold the pawl engaged with the teeth. The pawl is additionally held between the bottom of the case and cover. A bolt 24 is attached through the case and cover to hold them together, and also as a stop for the handle head portion 13. The outer end of the handle 3 is provided with a fiat part 25 attached by rivets 26 and 27 to make it longer for easier use.
From the foregoing it will appear that by manual operation drawing the outer end of the handle toward the case, the ratchet head will step-by-step, and then by allowing the handle to assume its outward position the spring attached to the curved part will pull its tooth out of mesh With the teeth in the ratchet head. Thus it will appear that by repeating the handle movement the toothed head part will he stepped around and turn its work-engaging parts inserted in square recesses in any part being worked upon. It will also appear that as a result of the compact structure of the wrench it is especially adapted for use in close places on parts having square holes for wrench contacts.
The wrench may be made of any material suitable for the purpose, but I prefer to use good grades of metal; also it may be made in diiterent sizes and capacities depending on how and where to be used.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not Wish to limit the same to the exact and precise details of structure, and I reserve the right to make all modifications and changes so long as they remain within the scope of the invention and the following claim.
Having described my invention I claim:
A reversible ratchet wrench comprising, a main case, said case having space for holding operating parts and also forming part as handle means, a cover, said cover being of a size and shape to fit upon and partly close the case, bolts holding the case and cover together, a short shaft having each end formed square and having its middle portion round, the round portion having teeth formed integral around the center thereof, a round hole in the case and a same size round hole in the cover, these two holes being in register with each other and having the round end portions of the shaft fitting revolvably in these holes; an elongated open space in one side of the case, a handle, said handle having an outer end portion with its other end fiat and blunt pointed, a stud bolt mounted in the case and cover, the middle part of the stud bolt forming a shaft, the flat part of the handle having a hole therethrough and being mounted pivotally on the stud bolt shaft portion; a curved part, said curved part having one end as an integral tooth of a size to fit the teeth on the said round part, the other end of the curved part having a slot formed therein, a small spring, this spring being positioned to hold the toothed end of the curved part adjacent the teeth in the round part; a pawl, this pawl being positioned between the case side and the round part with teeth, another small spring, this other spring being positioned between the pawl and case side and being adapted to act as a stop for the teeth in the round part; the round end of the handle being inserted in the slot in the curved part; a comparatively large spring, one end of this spring being attached in the edge of the flat part of the handle with its other end attached in the side of the case and being set to pull the handle toward the side of the case; a fiat plate portion, this portion being mounted upon the outer end portion of the handle.
