CORD-FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 301,558, dated July 8, 1884.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWARD Bnnv'ron, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Cedar Rapids,in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cord-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to render more expeditious and easy the fastening and unfastening of ropes, cords, straps, and the like; and the invention consists in a fastener, to one end of which the cord is permanently secured, and the other end is provided with a serrated crotch or fork to retain the cord after passing around an intermediate lateral hook, which admits of a free movement of the cord in ti ghtening, as will hereinafter more clearly appear.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective of the invention wit-h the hook nearest the spectator, and Fig. 2 a reverse view of the same.

The invention is so simple that its construction and operation will be readily seen by reference to the drawings. The fastener A is preferably of metal, and provided at one end with a hole, in which one end of the cord B is secured. The opposite end of the fastener is bifurcated, leaving a wedge-shaped opening or crotch, c. On one of the members made by this division is formed a hook, b, around which the cord is drawn, as shown, and fastened by drawing the free end into the crotch above referred to. i

To render the grip upon the cord certain and permanent, the crotch is serrated, the teeth inclining backward in the direction in which the end of the cord is drawn to fasten it. The teeth thus counteract the tendency of the cord to slip out of its place, while affording but a slight resistance to the operator when it becomes necessary to release the same;

The fastener admits of the cord being fastened much more quickly than by tying in the usual way, as but two motions are required, one being to draw the cord around the hook, and the other to press the loose end into the crotch. It is even. more quickly released. It

ened more tightly than by tying. The hook, while retaining the cord, allows it to slip freely, and around this as a center the cord may be strained to the utmost and the same tension sustained until it is secured by a downward sweep of the hand.

The difficulty of tying a cord drawn tightly about any body, and particularly a hard, unyielding body, and the comparative slowness of the operation, are facts too well known to require particularization.

I am aware that it is not new to fasten a cord by drawing it into a notch in a piece of metal or Wood attached to the opposite end of the cord, andI do not claim this, broadly, as my invention; but I know of no other device that admits of the cord being tightened by pulling one end without the other end being fastened to the body to be bound or held by another hand. Unlike other fasteners, this device may be operated almost entirely with one hand, the only use of another being to, keep the fastener in position until the cord is passed around the hook. In cases where the fastener is attached to the body to be tied as, for example, a bag-the whole operation, including the passing of the cord around the hook, may be performed with one hand while the other is otherwise engaged.

Having thus briefly described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A cord-fastener havinga cord permanently attached to one end, a lateral hook near the middle, which receives all the strain of the cord and allows it to slip freely in tightening, and a longitudinal serrated crotch in the other end, in which the cordis pressed and held after taking a half-turn about the hook, substantially as shown and described.
