Heinrich, Chesterton, 11111., assignor to The Celotex Corporation, Chicago, BL, a corporation of Delaware Filed Nov. 7, 1953, Ser. No. 772,595 4 Claims. (Cl. 118-239) This invention comprises a new and novel apparatus for painting or, more properly, for applying paint, particularly for applying paint to a groove or bevel or the like in the surface of a fiber wallboard unit. The principle involved is of general application wherever it is required that the paint be applied as a relatively narrow stripe or strip whether it is to a bevel or a V-groove, or merely a narrow stripe or strip or to beading or the like.
The invention is not limited to the application of a stripe or the like of paint to a fiber wallboard unit such as tile, but of general application with respect to relatively any base material comprising the unit to which the relatively narrow stripe or strip of paint is to be applied.
The application of such stripe or strip of paint by the more or less common paint trough together with the necessary paint pick-up roll, transfer roll, doctor roll and applicator roll is rather unsatisfactory in that, first, the required train of rolls is cumbersome and, second, in particular in connection with applying a narrow stripe or strip of paint, it is extremely difficult to obtain uniform paint application. With the ordinary form of paintapplying a paratus, as just above referred to, and particularly so in connection with such for applying a relatively narrow line or strip of paint, it is substantially impossible to maintain the required precise and uniform doctoring of the paint layer on the pa nt-applying roll for obtaining uniform paint application.
The invention hereof overcomes all the deficiencies of the conventional transfer roll type of paint applicator above generally referred to. The apparatus of this invention does away with the conventional paint trough, paint pick-up roll, transfer roll and doctor roll referred to above. The apparatus hereof comprises merely a suitably positioned paint-applying roll or disc with a precise supply of paint to the surface thereof so that a uniform application of the paint may be applied to a groove or the like.
The principal object of the invention hereof is that of providing an apparatus which is extremely simple and which provides for the application of a paint coat as a narrow stripe or strip with uniform application of paint.
The invention is disclosed in the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a view of the apparatus in perspective;
FIGURE 2 is a somewhat enlarged detail; and
FIGURES 3 and 4 are also slightly enlarged detail views illustrating slight variations.
In connection with the apparatus illustrated it is, of course, to be understood that there is provided a suitable supporting framework or base which, however, for the purpose of simplifying the illustration and description, is not shown, since in any case the supporting framework or base will vary according to conditions.
On a suitable framework or base there is provided a conveyor for conveying units of material, for example a fiber tile identified by numeral 12 and which is shown as having a face groove 13 and an edge bevel 14. A pusher lug 11 is indicated as carried by conveyor for advancing units 12 while suitably positioned under the paint-appiying roll or disc.
The roll or disc just referred to will subsequently be referred to as a transfer wheel, which is identified by numeral 29. Transfer wheel has a face 21 and is 3,015,301 iatented Jan. 2, 19,62
mounted on a shaft 22. A spray gun 23 is associated therewith and properly positioned by mounting in a housing, which will be described. This spray gun 23 is a relatively small spray gun of a type available on the market but is a gun which sprays a very precise quantity of paint and in which the spray pattern can be very' closely controlled. Spray gun 23 is supplied with paint by hose 24 and with air by hose 25. Since the spray gun 23 which is utilized is a commercially available spray gun, for the purpose of simplification no showing is made herein with respect to the paint or air control or to the details of spray pattern adjustment. A suitable spray gun for the purpose is the De Vilbiss type P-AGA with suitable air cap and fluid tip to provide a small round spray pattern.
What will be termed the housing will now be described. This housing supports spray gun 23 properly related to transfer wheel 2'0 so that there may be sprayed on the face 21 thereof a uniform layer of paint to be transferred by transfer wheel 20 as a stripe or strip which, as illustrated, may be the application of paint to a V- groove 13 of a tile-form unit 12. The housing is designated generally by numeral 36, and is more or less box form in shape to constitute a housing or hood Within which is received the upper portion of transfer wheel 29 and through the top of which extends spray gun 23 which may be suitably secured. Hood 3%] is provided with an air vent 31 and internally with shields 33 to defiect any overspray from the sides in surfaces of transfer wheel 23 and with secondary shields 34 which, together with wipers 35, are provided for preventing any excess paint from running down the sides of the transfer wheel 2%). Hood 3% is also provided with a waste drain 36 so that any overspray will find its way out of hood 30 and will not collect therein.
The parts of the apparatus above described are mounted to a table member St), the hood 3%. and associated parts being suitably secured on top of table member 50, whereas wheel it) is secured by hearing 28 to the under side of table 50 with the upper portion of wheel 2% extending up through a suitable slot therein.
Table 59 is carried by a slide member 51 which can be adjusted angularly with respect to a cross slide 54 on tightening and loosening bolt 53, which is also capable of adjustment linearly due to its dovetail slide connection to the angular adjustment member 52. The horizontal adjustment block 5'4 is mounted in the dovetail track 55 and is adjustable by means of the usual screw.
All the above adjustments just described being common to various devices and well known to those skilled in the art, only the brief reference as above has been made thereto since the construction is conventional.
A suitable drive for transfer wheel 20 is provided as by motor 40 which, preferably, is a geared motor, that is, a motor having integral therewith a suitable speed reduction element and which motor is provided with a pulley or sprocket 41 driving a belt or chain 42 as the case may be, and which in turn drives pulley or sprocket 43 mounted on shaft 22, the rotation of which rotates transfer wheel 2% The action of various paints in forming the desired film on face 21 of transfer wheel 20 varying with different paints, it may be advisable in some cases to modify face 21 either by knurling or the like as at 27, or to provide shallow grooves as at 26, as such are indicated in FIGURE 4.
In the operation of the apparatus as above described, the spray gun 23 is adjusted by suitable adjustment of the spray head to obtain either a small circular spray or possibly, in some cases, a narrow fan spray, which spray is directed against face 21 of the rotating transfer wheel 20. As the gun will spray a uniform coating on the wheel face 21, it is not necessary to provide for doctoring or the like, and with the spray properly set there will be very little overspray. As transfer wheel 20 with the desired coat of paint on its face 21 is rotated, the material or unit to be painted being moved thereunder, it follows that the layer of paint on the Wheel face 21 will be transferred to the groove or the like of unit 12, and bythis very simple operation it is posible to obtain a proper painting or coating of the groove. It will be understood, of course, that the adjustments which 'were above very briefiy described provide for properly locating transfer wheel 20 with respect to the groove or like which is to be painted by the transfer of the paint coating from the wheel face 21 to the surface of the groove or the like. If a bevel is to be coated then a beveled wheel 20 such as shown in FIGURE 3 will be used and the shields 33 will be suitably modified as shown in FIG- URE3.
'The invention hereof having been disclosed in detail, I claim:
1. Apparatus for applying paint, comprising a paint transfer wheel, the wheel having a beveled paint carrying and applying peripheral face, a paint spray gun mounted adjacent thereto and supplying a uniform coat of paint directly to the peripheral face of the transfer wheel for application thereby, a hood member mounted on said spray gun enclosing said spray gun and a portion of said paint transfer wheel, and deflecting shield members connected to the bottom periphery of said hood and extending upwardly therefrom closely embracing said paint transfer wheel on each side thereof to deflect over-spray from said spray gun and form a reservoir for reception of said over-spray.

Paint applying apparatus comprising in combination a conveyor conveying units to which paint is to be ap plied, an adjustable supporting structure operatively' related to the conveyor and including an adjustable table member, a paint transfer wheel journaled to the table member, a hood member mounted to the table member and enclosing a segment of the paint transfer wheel, a paint spray gun mounted on the hood member and directed to apply a paint coat to that portion of the paint transfer wheel within the hood and means operatively connected to the paint transfer wheel and imparting thereto rotational motion about its axis.
3. The paint applying apparatus of claim 2, sheet form paint deflecting shield members mounted within the hood, the shield members closely embracing the paint transfer wheel on each side thereof closely adjacent its periphery and diverging outwardly and downwardly with respect thereto and serving to deflect overspray from the spray gun. a
4. Apparatus for applying paint, comprising a paint ransfer wheel, the wheel having a beveled paint carrying and applying peripheral face, a paint spray gun mounted adjacent thereto and supplying a uniform coat of paint directly to the peripheral face of the transfer wheel for application thereby, a hood member mounted on said spray gun enclosing said spray gun and a portion of said paint transfer wheel, deflecting shield members connected to the bottom periphery of' said hood and extending upwardly therefrom closely embracing said paint transfer wheel on each side thereof to deflect over-spray from said spray gun and form a reservoir for reception of said over-spray, and means connected to said reservoir for removing said over-spray for re-use.
