Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J. H. BOYD, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
SADDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,118, dated September 25, 1860.
To all whom it may cof/wem:
Be it known that I, J. I-I. BOYD, of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Mak ing Rolls to the Cantle of Saddles; and I do hereby declare that t-he following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of 'reference marked thereon.
The nature of Iny'invention consists in providing the cantle of a saddle with an india rubber roll, substantially as will be hereafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I Will proceed to describe its construction and operation. I construct my roll on any of the known forms of saddle-trees, but more generally to a Somerset tree.
Figure 1, is a perspective View of a saddle-tree, strained in the usual Way, with the roll attached, A, A representing the tree and straining. Thatpart marked B, represents an india rubber roll, molded in such form as to tit on the cantle of the tree, to
which it is permanently secured by tacking it, both to the inside and outside of the cantle, or in any manner substantially the same. VAfter the roll is thus put on, the saddle is completed in the usual Way of a leather or stued roll. rlhis roll may be made of various sizes to suit the different size trees. I generally make it about an inch in thickness by an inch and a half Wide, rather oval, or egg-shaped, with a groove in the thin part Which fits over the cantle of the tree. The length must be in proportion to the tree as in the case of a leather roll.
The advantage of this roll is, that it can be put on in less time than in any other Way; and, that it gives a broadelastic seat to a saddle. Y
hat. I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isM
The application to the cantle of saddles of an india rubber roll as herein described.
J. H. BOYD.
Titnesses THos. S. IV. BOYD, WM. B. BOYD.
