WALTER RAVENSGROFT, OF PARKERSBURG, VEST VIRGINIA.
eArviE'oR'ToY BLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 301,158, dated July 1, 1884.
Application filed November-"7, 1883. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VALTER S. RAVENS- onorr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Parkersburg, in the county of Vood and State of West Virginia, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in Game or Toy Blocks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to the manufacture of toy building-blocks, dominoes, checkers, dice, educational blocks, and articles of like character from paper and wood pulp.
The object of my invention is to produce cheap and durable articles of the class above named, and at the same time furnish articles which will have a fine finish and be more artistic in appearance than those heretofore made.
In the drawings I have shown a varietyof articles which I propose to make from paper or wood pulp, which I will now refer to in their order.
Figure l is a view in perspective of a d01nino. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of a checker. Fig. 3is a view in perspective of an educational block. Figs. 4, 5, (3, 7, andS are viewsin perspective of toy building-blocks, which may be made of any desired form, for the construction of toy houses, &c.
In carrying out my invention, the paperpulp or wood fiber is reduced to the desired degree of fineness by any suitable or wellknown means,an'd to a homogeneous mass of a doughy consistence. Chemicals may be added at the proper time to produce a white article, or coloringmatter may be incorporated therewith to give the mass the proper tint or color. I may also mix with the pulp a small proportion of earthy material; or resinous substances or glue may be added to harden and cause the material to adhere more firmly together. The pulp thus prepared is put into a mold of the desired form and subjected to heavy pressure, the molds being provided with minute apertures to admit of the escape of water or other moisture when the pulp is pressed in a moist or wet condition. The articles, when formed, are taken from the mold and thoroughly dried by natural or artificial heat, or by ex posure to the air.
The molds may be provided with any desired design in cameo orintaglio, so as to produce on the article letters, figures, numerals, characters, or designs of any kind in relief or 5 5 in depression; or the articles may be formed in plain molds with plain surfaces, and the designs, figures, letters, &c., printed, painted, or stenciled thereon and coated or saturated with oil, size, or varnish, so as to give the arti- 6o ole the proper and desired finish. y
I have described the articles as made from wet pulp; but I do not wish to limit myself to such, as I may press the pulp in a dry or comparatively dry state into the form desired by subjecting it to suificient pressure. The pulp may also bemixed with powdered glue or other adhesive material in a dry state, and then subjected to pressure under heat, which will cause the particles to adhere firmly together. The toughness and lightness of this material peculiarly adapt it for articles of this class.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
As a new article of manufacture, game or toy blocks made from paper or wood pulp, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\VALTER S. RAVENSOROFT.
itnesses:
