UNITED STATES Parent Oraties,
ABRAHAM O. HARRISON, OF PROVIDENCE, OHIO.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,364, dated June 17E 1884.
Application tiled November 13, 1883.
(No model .b
To (LZ/ whom it may concern.-
Be it .known that l, ABRAHAM C. HannisoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Fence- XVith these and other objects in view the i i5.said invent-ion consists in constructing the thorough and intense heat, and formingveri upright standards ad] usted within the recesses l, l i
tical recesses in the front and rear faces of the base, and in combining the base with the standards adjustably secured within the rceesses, the sides of said base forming flanges to retain the standards in place, as set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspcctivevicw of a. portion of afence illustrating my invention. lfiff. 2 is a detail perspective view of the post. Fig. is a vertical transverse sectional. view ciL the same.
Like letters refer to corresponding parts in the several iigures.
Referring to the drawings, i designates the base of my improved post, constructed from tiling, but burned harder than the latter, so as to be imperishalnc. It is formed by ineans o'fsnitable dies or lnoids, in the shape shown, in any ordinary tiling-machine, and when finished it has an appearance somewhat similar to the ordinary sewer-pipe. Said base et is formed on its front and rear face with vertical recesses B, extending the entire length of the saine, the sides of the base forming llanges C, which extend outward on each side of the recesses.
D designates upright bars or standards, se-
cured at their lower ends Within the recesses B of the. base A, and extending upward parallel with cach other, as shown. A space, E, is left between the upright standards, through which maybe passed the rails F of the fence,
means o1'r bolts (Si, which pass through the rails from one standard to the other. By this means of securing the rails of the fence they are he] d securely in place and the ,standards` are connected together, and thus there Will be less liability of breaking the post, which often occurs in the old forni of nailing the rails against the sides of the same.
Then it is desired to use the post in connection with a Wire fence, the top ends of the upright standards D are secured together, so as to malte the post solid, and the wires may then be strung or connected either between the standards or to the sides of the same.
The purposes and advantages of my invention are numerous. By means of the recesses in the sides of the carthcnwarc base A the latter may be secured in the ground and the to suit the height of the fence and secured at any desired point. that the fencepost should be a certain degree lower above the ground, the standards are merelypermitted to slide downward in the recesses and secured at the desired point. By this means there will be no necessity of digging a larger or deeper holea course generally pursued in order to adapt a post to the required height.
The base, being constructed, as above stated, like the ordinary sewer-pipe, is imperishable in its character, and can be made of any suit able size or shape by merely changing the dies oi' the tiling-machine in which carthcnn'are articles are made. In their position within the recesses of the base the upright standards are held not only by the securing-bolt, but by thellanges C ot' the base, which serve to retain the standards in place and prevent lateral movement of the same.
l do not liinit myself to the application of my invention to a fence, since my improved post may be applied wherever by its use it might be found serviceable and inexpensive.
My invention admits of the construction of a post which is very simple and can be inanu factored at a slight expense, is adapted to various uses, and will last a life-time.
Having described my invention. I claim as as shown, the rails being secured therein by newand desire to secure by Letters/Patent Thus, when it is found IOO In L posh for' fences and the like, the base In testimony that I claim the foregoing as constructed 0f earthenware 0r tiling and promy own I have hereto affixed my signature in.
