ATTORNEY Sept, 26, 1961 w. E, BLOUNT POP CASE 3 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed 001;. 8, 1959 A INVENTOR ZU'//// czm. E. lean? an% I United States Patent 3,001,685 POP CASE William E. Blount, Des Moines, Iowa, assignor to Hoerner Boxes, Inc., Keokuk, Iowa, a corporation of Delaware Filed Oct. 8, 1959, Ser. No. 845,205 Claims. (Cl. 22934) This invention relates to cartons made from a single sheet of foldable material such as corrugated board or fiber board which may be cut, scored and shipped flat and then readily folded into a carton having characterisitc firmness, strength and durability. A further object of the invention is to provide a carton which does not require adhesives, stapling or stitching for its assembly but which may be assembled rapidly and easily into a strong durable carton.
Another object of the invention is to provide for interlocking the parts which form the carton to make the same of a rigid assembly when folded. Another object of the invention is to provide a carton which is lightweight and inexpensive, the stock for which is readily available.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the folded carton.
FIGURE 2 is a plan view of the blank cut and scored ready for folding.
FIGURE 3 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the folding of the end portions.
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view showing a further step in the folding of the end portions.
FIGURE 5 is a perspective view showing the final folding for the end portions.
FIGURE 6 is a perspective view showing the complete folding of one side portion and the partial folding of the other.
FIGURE 7 is a fragmentary sectional view on line 7-7 of FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 8 is a sectional view on line 8-8 of FIG- URE 1.
In the drawings similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The carton 1 is folded from a blank cut and scored as illustrated in FIGURE 2. The blank has a central section 2 and side walls having an outer portion 3 and an inner portion 4, the latter of which have articulated therewith inner bottom portions 5. The end walls have outer portions 6 and inner portions 7. To each of these portions 6 and 7 are articulated flaps comprising sections 8, 9, and 10. In effecting the assembly, flap parts 9 and 10 are folded on the score lines between 8 and 9 centrally together as shown in FIGURE 3 so that the ends of the flaps join in the center of the outer and inner portions of the end walls. The end wall portions have hand holds 11 cut therein and the ends of the flaps have half hand holds 12 cut therein so that each of these half hand holds 12 join as shown in FIGURE 3. The inner and outer end wall portions are then folded as shown in FIGURE 3 along the score lines between 8 and 9 and also between the sections 7 and 8 and then the inner portion is folded within the outer portion of the ends as shown in FIGURE 4 so that the free ends of the flaps lie next to each other. The final folding of the end Walls normal to the central section as shown in FIGURE 5 then completes their assembly.
The side walls are then folded around the projecting parts of the flaps on the end walls as shown in FIGURE 6 and the two inner bottom portions, on the side inner portions, abut together securely over the central section 3,001,685 Patented Sept. 26, 1961 and this abutting relation holds the inner side portions firmly in place so that the inner and outer portions of the side walls are parallel and since the inner bottom portions are slightly longer than their adjacent inner side portions, they press firmly against the end walls as shown at 13 in FIGURE 7, and the inner end portions are held firmly parallel to their outer portions. Intermediate portions 14 and 15 lie between the side outer and inner portions 3 and 4 and the end outer and inner portions 6 and 7 respectively and these intermediate portions are cut on an angle at their ends 16 at 45 degrees so that they make straight 45 degree angles in their top corners as shown at 17 in FIGURE 1, presenting a straight symmetrical top for the corners of the carton and with four thicknesses of the material at the corners to give firmness and strength to the carton as assembled and the hand holds 11 pass through all the layers of material at the ends so that the carton may be firmly grasped.
It will be apparent that many modifications may be made in the construction above described in detail without departing from the invention.
What is claimed as new and is desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A carton comprising an integral sheet cut, scored and folded to provide a substantially rectangular central section and interlocked side and end walls extending upwardly from opposite edges of the central section, said side and end walls being intermediately folded into outer and inner portions, end wall flaps articulated to each end of each portion of the end walls, opposite flaps on each portion being folded inwardly, substantially joining each other centrally of the end walls and providing doubled flap ends projecting from the sides of the end portions for folding from each end of the carton toward the other, said side wall portions being folded over said end wall projecting flaps in covering relation, the inner portions of the side walls having articulated inner bottom portions proportioned together to be commensurate with the central section and in mutual abutment to secure the side walls in assembled relation and with both portions parallel to each other around the projecting end wall flaps.
2. The carton of claim 1 in which the free ends of the flaps on the outer and inner end portions are adjacent each other when the portions are folded to form the end walls.
3. The carton of claim 1 in which the outer and inner portions forming the side and end walls are joined and spaced by an intermediate portion along their upper marginal edges, said outer and inner portions of each end and side wall being disposed in spaced and substantially parallel relationship to one another over their respective areas, the end wall portions enclosing their flap ends and the side wall portion enclosing the quadrupled thickness of the projecting flaps.
4. The carton of claim 1 in which each articulated bottom portion covers substantially one-half the central section.
5. The carton of claim 1 in which the end wall portions and flaps contain registering openings to form a hand hold in each end wall when the carton is assembled.
