SINK. No. 300,130. Patented June 10,1084.

N ITE STATES ATENT OFFICE.
, SINK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,130, dated June 10, 1884. Application filed December 3, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. .REGAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and Stateof New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sinks, of which thefollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to a means for preventing the escape of sewer-gas into an apartment; and the invention is applicable to kitchensinks, water-closets, wash-basins, bath-tubs, and all similar devices which communicate with waste-pipes leading to or from sewers or cesspools, where sewer-gas may be generated or accumulated.
The invention consists in a novel construction and combination, with a sink or other device, of a chamber for the reception of any sewer-gas arising through the waste-pipe, a partition or gate for preventing the escape of said gas into the apartment, and a conduit for conveying said gas to the outside of the building, as hereinafter more particularly described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a top view, partly in section, of a sink with my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section taken in the line as w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section taken in the line 3/ y of Fig. 1.
A represents the body of a sink similar to those used in kitchens. At one end of this sink is a compartment, B, formed by the end wall of the sink, a portion of the side walls, a top plate, a, and a partition or gate, 0. The partition or gateO is here shown as removable, and fitting in ways or grooves in the side walls of the sink; but, if preferred, the partition may be permanent and provided with a removable gate. At the lower edge of the partition or gate, where it joins the bottom of the sink, it is provided with a number of holes or notches, forming a strainer.
At the bottom of the chamber or compartment B, and communicating with it is a hopper, D, the bottom of which terminates in a neck, 6, for the attachment of a waste-pipe.
The top of the hopper may be provided with a strainer, f, as shown 5 or the strainer may be ventilating shaft or flue in any suitable manner. When any sewer-gas arises through the waste-pipe into the chamber or compartment B, instead of passing out into the room, it rises of its own levity to the top of the chamber and passes off through the collar G and the escape-pipe connected therewith, and is conducted to the outer atmosphere. The removable gate affords access to the chamber for the purpose of cleansing it.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a sink or vessel, of a compartment for the reception of sewergas, arranged within the sink, and a pipe or passage for conducting away the gas which may arise within the chamber or com partment', substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, in a sink or other like vessel, of a cap or cover, a, at one end, and a slide or door for separating the sink into an open and a closed compartment, the closed compartment being provided with exit-pipes for the discharge of water and gas, respectively, as specified.
G. T. REGAN.
