(Cl. 30-202) This invention relates to electric hair clippers, and more particularly to an improved` attachment for'such a clipper which will enable a tapering cut of the hair to be produced by an untrained operator, and provide a professional appearing haircut.

One object of the present invention is to provide a hair clipper attachment of the above nature in which a pair of spring pressed arms are employed to regulate the closeness of the cut of the hair from the scalp, so that said cut will be shorter at the initial phase of each stroke `and higher at the end of said stroke.

A further object is to provide an attachment of the above nature having means to raise the hair from the scalp into the path of the cutting teeth of the clipper, said means comprising a spring wire, a `brush or other device, which is located a short distance in front of said teeth.

A still further object is to provide an attachment of the above nature which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install and manipulate, compact, ornamental in Iappearance, and very efficient and durable in use.

With these and other objects in view there has been illustrated on the accompanying drawings one form in which the invention may conveniently be embodied in practice.

The purpose of the present invention is to provide a hair clipper attachment having a pair of side pivoted arms having rubber tips which engage the scalp, permitting the cutter to be gradually raised away from the scalp so as to produce la tapered professional haircut. The fulcrum of the pivoted arms is adjustably to enable the clipper to be elevated to progressively greater distances from the scalp, so that near the crown of the head the hair will be thicker than at the edges of the scalp.

Referring now to the drawings, in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 indicates a body casing of an electric hair clipper having a rear cord 11 extending therefrom embracing a pair of insulated conducting wires 12, 13. The body casing 10 is provided with a top dished cover section 14 secured to the rear of said body casing 10 by means of a pair of Allen-headed set screws 15 and '16.

3,094,777 Patented June 25, 1963 ice In order to control the current supplied, provision is made on the side of the casing 10 of a slidable switch button 17 which is electrically connected to a motor 18 which operates a vibrating toothed cutter 19, in the usual manner. The cutter 19 is located adjacent an inclined toothed guard plate 20 detachably secured rigidly to the lforward inclined end of the casing 10 as by a pair of headed screws 20a. The teeth of the guard 20 coact with the teeth of the cutter I9 to cut the hair in the usual manner.

The hair clipping attachment embodying the present invention is indicated generally by the letter A, and is provided with a pair of forward parallel side wings W', W1, which embrace the forward part of the hair clipper guard 20.

In `order to permit an unskilled person to produce a professional haircut, provision is made of a pair of movable spring-pressed

A longitudinalv coil spring 26 is attached to the crosspin 23 by means of a vertical screw' 26a and is secured to the cover section 14 of the casing 10 by a vertical pin 26h.

Provision is also made of a U-shaped wire arm 29, of `small cross-section, rigidly secured at its ends to the forward section 30 of the attachment A at the front of the wings W, W1 as shown, in order to raise or pick up the slack hair from the scalp into position to be cut by the clipper.

The attachment A is also provided with a longitudinal slot 34 within which is slidably mounted .a vertical screw 37 which is held in adjusted position by a lock nut 35 having a knurled head 36, said screw 37 being rigidly mounted in the cover section 14.

21, 22 will tllgaler lie moved into the operating position, as shown in The operator will then move the clippers from the edge of the hair line of the scalp gradually upward toward the crown of the head, while causing the rubber tips 28 to remain in stationary contact with the scalp, and permitting the cutter to be gradually elevated to provide for a closer clipping at the beginning and a longer clipping at the end of the stroke. By means of this construction, a professional `tapering hair cut may thus be achieved. It will be seen that the attachment A may be adjusted back and forth in order to raise the cutting -shears according to the height lof the haircut desired.

It will also be understood that during the use of this attachment A, the soft rubber feet 28 at the ends of the

21, 22 will engage the scalp, and that the U-shaped wire 29 will 4raise the hair therefrom into cutting position.

When the clipper is pressed to the head, the arms will yield against the action of the spring 26. After the first V 3 cut has taken place, the pivotal arms will then be returned to the first position by the spring 26 when the clipper is raised from the scalp to permit an adjacent cut of exactly ,the same taper as set by the position of the slide 31.

The attachment A may be moved whenever desired from the rear position shown in FIGS. 2 and 3 to the forward position shown in FIGS. Sand 9, in successive steps, permitting the cut to be made higher and higher.

It will also be understood that when the clipper is pushed against the scalp, the

One advantage of this invention is that this attachment can be assembled upon many standard types of hair clippers.

While there has been disclosed in this specilcation one form in which the invention may be embodied it is to be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not limited to this specific disclosure, but may be modied and embodied in various other equivalent forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claims.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent is:

1. In a hair clipping device for producing a tapering haircut, a casing having an electric motor-operated vibrating toothed cutter which recprocates over a stationary toothed guard plate located at the front of said casing, a longitudinally shiftable U-shaped attachment adjustably mounted on the top of said casing at the from end thereof, said attachment having a pair of side wings embracing said vibrating cutter and guard plate, a cross pin passing through said side wings, a pair of side arms pivotally mounted outside of said Wings respectively upon the cross pin, said arms being pivotally urged upwardly by coil springs,` the ends of said arms having soft tips which engage the scalp Without injury lthereto, whereby when said clipper is raised upwardly said arms will yield and produce the desired tapered haircut.

:2. The invention as defined in claim 1, in which said attachment is provided with a longitudinal slot, and a headed lock screw passing through said slot into said casing to clamp said attachment in any desired cutting position as adjusted to the length of haircut.

3. The invention defined in claim 1, in which said casing is provided with a pair of longitudinal parallel tracks, and said attachment is provided with concave ribs tting said tracks to prevent wobbling of the attachment during the use of the clipper.

4. The invention as defined in claim, l in which said attachment is connected to said casing by a longitudinal spring which urges said attachment rearwardly.

5. The invention as defined in claim l, in which said cross pin is provided at its ends with grooves for receiving U-shaped lock Washers to retain said arms in operating position on the ends of said cross pin.

IN A HAIR CLIPPING DEVICE FOR PRODUCING A TAPERING HAIRCUT, A CASING HAVING AN ELECTRIC MOTOR-OPERATED VIBRATING TOOTHED CUTTER WHICH RECIPROCATES OVER A STATIONARY TOOTHED GUARD PLATE LOCATED AT THE FRONT OF SAID CASING, A LONGITUDINALLY SHIFTABLE U-SHAPED ATTACHMENT ADJUSTABLY MOUNTED ON THE TOP OF SAID CASING AT THE FRONT END THEREOF, SAID ATTACHMENT HAVING A PAIR OF SIDE WINGS EMBRACING SAID VIBRATING CUTTER AND GUARD PLATE, A CROSS
