JOSEPH P. BULLOOK', OF MILVAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF TVO- THIRDS TO THE DENNETT HARVESTING MACHINE. COMPANY, (LIM- ITED,) OE SAME PLACE.
NEEDLE FOR GRAIN-BINDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No'. 309,026, dated December 9, 1884.-.
Application filed September 21, 1583. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnri-r P. BULLooK, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Needles for Grain-Binders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to improvements in needles for grainbinders, and will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure l is a vertical section of the binder-table, showing a side view of my improved needle; and Fig. 2 shows on a larger scale said improved needle in a dit'` ferent position.
A is the needle or binder arm, attached in the usual way in the binder-frame B. Instead of having the tail-guard O made rigid with the needle or binder arm, as is generally done, said tail-guard is a separate part hinged on the ear a of the tail a on the needleor binder arm, the square end of which is slightly nan rowed in the form of alug, I), against which said tail-guard G may rest on its shoulder c when the needle A occupies over the frame B the position indicated by the dotted lines, Fig. l. This hinging of the tail-guard of the needie prevents its end from striking the ground or anything projecting from it when said needle is lowered under the frame B, as said tailguard O is then forced to engage and slide upon the inner face of the curved deiiecting-plate I), bolted in a proper place underneath said frame B. XVhen said needle A is raised up again, said tail-guard C is made to resume its normal position by the action of the flat spring d, which is fastened at one end on the inside edge of the needleiail a, and has its free end pressing against the inside edge of said tailguard O.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ism l. A needle or binder arm for a self-binding harvester, having a guard pivo'ted to the tail thereof', and provided with a spring for keeping` the guard extended, in combination with a deflecting-plate attached to the bindenframe, adapted to be struck by and fold the guard up against the plate when the needle is lowered, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A needle or binder arm for self-binders, having the guard C hinged to the tail of the needle or binder arm on the ear a, the lug b, and the spring d, in combination with the curved guide or deiiecting plate D, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose Aset forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of NVisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH P. BULLOCK.
