The main object of the invention is to provide a portable smoking kiln suitable for use by anglers and tourists for the preparation under improvised conditions during trips or tours of smoked food of a good quality by a uniform treatment of the food with hot smoke obtained by controlled and even heating of the material such as wood powder or flour or shavings used for the generation of smoke.
A further object of the invention is to provide a portable smoking kiln which is simple and has a small weight and size which enables an easy transportation of the kiln by its user.
These objects are obtained by a portable smoking kiln comprising in combination a closed smoking chamber provided with a removable lid, a grate arranged at a distance from the bottom in said chamber, and a support for said chamber being constructed as a fire box and having walls serving as wind-screen.
In the smoking kiln according to the invention the smoking chamber and its support may be connected to form a unit, in which case it is, however, preferred to provide a support consisting of several parts forming a collapsible unit together with the smoking chamber or to arrange the smoking chamber slideable in the support thus enabling a reduction of the size of the smoking kiln for its transportation or storage in the luggage of the owner.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention the smoking kiln consists, however, of two separate units, a smoking chamber and a support. These two units are prefer ably constructed to enable the use of the support as container for the smoking chamber or the use of the smoking chamber as container for the support for transportation of the smoking kiln.
The invention is described in detail by reference to the drawings showing as examples two embodiments of a portable smoking kiln according to the invention. In the portable smoking kiln according to FIGS. 1-7 the smoking chamber and the support are two separate units, whereas the smoking chamber and the support are connected with each other and form a collapsible smoking kiln according to FIGS. 8 and 9.
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the support of the smoking kiln.
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the smoking chamber arranged upon the support according to FIG. 1 when the kiln is ready for use.
FIG. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 4 is a vertical section taken on the line 4-4 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 5 illustrates the use of the support according to atet D lifibhb z Patented Mar. 19, 1963 FIG. 1 as container for the smoking chamber for transportation of the kiln according to FIG. 2.
FIG. 6 is a vertical section taken on the line 66 of FIG. 5.
FIG. 7 is a vertical section taken on the line 7-7 of FIG. 5.
The rectangular support shown in FIG. 1 consists of a bracket 1 and a U-shaped main part having three closed side- walls 2, 3 and 4. This main part is produced by bending a piece of sheet metal, preferably steel, having a width corresponding to the desired height of the support. Each side- wall 2, 3 and 4 is bent at one of its longitudinal edges at a right angle inward to provide flat bearing surfaces 2', 8 and 4 for the smoking chamber upon the support. The bracket 1 which is also produced by bending a piece of sheet metal the width of which is much smaller than the height of the support is welded or riveted onto the outer side of the free ends of the sidewalls 2 and 4 near the bearing surfaces 2 and 4.
The smoking chamber consists of a rectangular container as main part, a grill 10 and a removable lid 11. The container has side-walls 5, a front-wall 6, a backwall 7 and a bottom 8. The side-walls 5 together with the bottom -8 of the container are produced by bending of a piece of sheet metal to form a U-shape piece, whereas the front-wall 6 and the back-wall 7 are inserted into this U-shaped piece and the welded or riveted onto vertical shoulders at the free edges of the bottom 8 and inwardly directed shoulders at the vertical edges of the side-walls 5. Each side-wall 5 is at its free horizontal edge provided with an outwardly bent shoulder forming a right angle with the side-wall 5 and these two shoulders serve as tracks for the removable lid 11 which is provided with a handle 12 welded or riveted onto the lid 11. Onto the inner side of each side-wall 5 is welded or riveted an angular bracket 9 of sheet metal which supports the grill 10 consisting of metal bars or wire net and serving as support for the food to be smoked. The material used for the generation of smoke such as Wood flour or wood shavings is carried by the bottom 8 of the smoking chamber and uniformly heated by a heating apparatus 15 such as a spirit burner placed in the interior of the support according to FIG. 1.
The dimensions of the support frame according to FIG. 1 and the smoking chamber shown in FIG. 2 are adapted to each other in such a manner that the smoking chamber may be nested in the inverted support frame when the kiln is not used as shown in FIGS. 5-7. In this position the smoking chamber may be carried by the shoulders 2', 3 and 4 and the bracket 1 prevents the slipping of the smoking chamber from the support frame.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What is claimed is:
A portable kiln for curing raw foodstufi by hot smoke, said kiln comprising, in combination, a self-contained first unit for receiving therein the foodstutt to be cured and smoke generating material, and a self-contained second unit for accommodating therein a heat generating means, said first unit comprising a generally rectangular closed container made of a heat resistant material for accumulating smoke therein, a grill for placin the foodstufi thereon mounted Within said container parallel to and spaced apart from the bottom thereof, said bottom being adapted to receive thereon smoke generating material, the top wall of the container being slidably fitted to side walls thereof to form a lid; and said second unit comprising a support frame having three closed side Walls defining a substantially rectangular outline, the fourth side of the second unit being open, said support frame constituting a windbreak and being adapted to rest upon a base along the longitudinal edges on one side of said 10 side Walls and to support the first unit on the opposite longitudinal edges of said side Walls, the inner peripheral out-line of one unit being of greater extentthan the outer peripheral outline of the other unit so that the two units can be nested in each other, the lower longitudinal edges of said side Walls of the frame terminating in re-entrant flanges, said flanges constituting a support for the container when resting upon said frame and also when nested 5 in the frame.
