I I f/l/l/ l// //l Phulu-Lilhogvipher. Washington. I:v c
UNITED STATES PATENT UF ICE.
IVILLIAM HENRY LOWE, OF HUTSONVILLE, ILLINOIS.
DEVICE FOR REMOVING WAGON-BODIES.
SPECIPIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,864, dated November 11, 1884.
(No model.)
To ctZZ whom it 7)7/.l/ I./ concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Lown, of Hutsonville, in the county of Crawford and- State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Removing \Vagon-Bodies; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to improvements in apparatus for lifting wagon-beds, in which a cord and pulleys operate in conjunction with a windlass; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to lift the body ofthe wagon offthe wheels; second, to accomplish the removal of the body off the wheels with the least danger of damage to the body; third, to accomplish these ends with the greatest economy of power. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an elevation showing my improvements. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing my improvements. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the Windlass used. in my invention.
Similar letters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Upon the rafters A A, and extending between the same, are the crosspieces B B, connecting and mortised into which are the pieces 0 0. Into these pieces are let longitudinal slots, in which are placed the pulleys D D. Leading to these pulleys is the cord E, which is wound around the Windlass F, which is engaged by a pawl, G, and is operated by a crank handle, II, also having a slot, I, at the extremity of which slot are holes I I, bored diametrically through the Windlass, for the purpose of lengthening the cord on one side while shortening it on the other. The
cord E being passed through these holes I I is carried upward and over the pulleys D D, then along and around the pulleys K K to and over the pulleys L L, from whence the cord descends to the pulleys M M, passing around which it is carried upward and over the pulleys N N, from whence it again descends and is passed around the pulleys O O, and then again carried upward to stationary pins within the slots P P, and fastened thereto. The pulleys O O M M are pivotally fastened in the slotted pieces R It, at whose lower extremities are fastened the cross-pieces S S, near the extremities of which cross-pieces, and extend ing therefrom, are the chains and hooks T'T.
In the operation of my improvements the wagon is brought under the pieces S S and the hooks T T are fastened to the bed, and then the bed is drawn up and off the wheels by turning the windlass F, which winds up the cord E, which is drawn over the pulleys D D K K L L, under the pulleys M M, over the pulleys N N, under the pulleys O O, and is fastened to the stationary pins in the slots P P. As will be seen, the cord B being fastened to the stationary pin stated, and drawn taut at the other end by the revolution of the windlass, tends to hoist the pieces S S, and, of course, in so doing raises the wagon-bed or anything that is attached thereto.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The combination of the crane B B, provided with the pullcysLN, with the T-shaped cross-pieces S, and the tackle O M and cord E to operate the same, substantially as and for the purpose set forth and described.
2. The combination of the crane B B, the T-shaped cross-piece S, and the tackle O M with the cord E, and windlass I, substantially as and for the purpose set forth and described.
3. The combination of the H shaped crane, and the pulleys D, K, L, and N, arranged on said frame with the Windlass I, cord E, tackle O M, and cross-pieces S, provided with pendent hooks T, substantially as and for the pur-' pose set forth and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I append my signature.
WILLIAM HENRY LOWE.
