PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,830, dated November 11, 1884-.
Application filed April 17, 1883. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED BARBOUR, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Tarentum, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe- WVrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a style of nut or pipe wrench to which I have applied my pipecutting tool in combination therewith. Fig. 2 is an elevation, partly in section, of the style of wrench shown in Fig. 1, exhibiting the pi pe-cutter attached thereto, with the necessary modifications which adapt it for use as a combination-tool.
My invention relates to pipe wrenches or tongs; and it consists in the combination and arrangement of levers constituting a wrench of the selt adjusting order with a pipe-cutter combined. A detailed description of it will be given, and the points of novelty believed to be new will be set forth in the claim.
A represents the wrench, composed of the lever a, fulcrumed at a, and the link I), pivoted to the fulcrum'point of the lever. The short arm 0 of the lever a is segment-shaped and provided with a serrated gripping-face arranged to swing outwardly from the hook-link Z) when engaging the pipe to be operated upon, and inwardly when it is desired to release the pipe. The link I) is bifurcated, so as to embrace the lever a, and so that the latter may swing freely through it. It is also preferably provided with an angular recess in its outer end,which serves to hold the pipe more firmly in place.
The construction of the pipe or nut wrench heretofore described I have devised to be used in combination with a. pipe-cutter, as shown in Fig. 2, and which I claim as my invention. The lever a a is constructed in two parts, one of which, a, carries a clamping-jaw, c, opposite the segmental gripper c, and a female threaded socket, into which the other part or lever-handle, (l, enters with its screw-thread d. Surrounding the two parts of the lever is a sleeve, B, carrying the cutter-wheel D, the adjustment of which is secured for cutting the pipe by the revolution of the lever-handle within the screw-socket, the shoulder e of the lever forcing the sleeve B and its wheel into contact continuously as the pipe is cut.
