SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,788, dated November 11, 1884.

ya citizen of the United States, residing at Wenona, in the county of Marshall and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of a cultivator constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a similar view, with vthe position of the teeth changed; and Fig. 3, a detail view oi' one of the curved arms for attaching to the cultivator-beam, and also a similar view of the shoe with the tooth connected thereto.

The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in cultivators, which will be hereinafter described, and subsequently pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents the beam of the cultivator, and B the handle.

To the beam A are detachably connected curved arms C D E F, their lower ends being wedge shape, as shown at a, to fit into a tapering or similar-formed opening or slot, b, in a shoe, G, said shoe having elongated slots c d.

Through the slots c, and through the wedge shape end a, passes a bolt, e, and through the lower' slots el, passes a wooden pin, f, so that when the plow or tooth H comes in contact with any hard substance-such as a stone-the pin will break and allow the shoe with its tooth to yield, and thus prevent injury thereto.

rIhe advantages of the wedge shape ends a of the curved arms and the correspondinglyformed slots bin the shoes, in connection with the elongated slots in the sides thereof, enable the shoes to be driven tightly upon the wedgeshaped ends of the standards or curved arms, insuring a much firmer joint than were they not of tapering or wedge-shaped form, while the elongated slots in the sides of the shoes admit of the fastening-bolts resting at any point arrived at after driving the shoes upon the ends of the standards or curved arms.

The plows or teeth H may be changed with relation to each other, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, by removing the nuts from the bolts which connect them to the coltivatorbeam A and reversing the curved arms.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a cultivator, a series of curved arms connected to the beam thereof, and having their ends tapering or wedge shape, in combination with the shoes which carry the teeth or shov` els, provided with a tapering or wedge shape slot to receive the ends of the arms, and elongated slots through its sides for the fasteningbolt and wooden pin, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
