The invention relates to a cosmetic make-up device and more particularly to improvements adapting parts of the device to be made on an automatic screw machine, further objects being to improve and simplify the construction.
The present invention is an improvement over and includes features described and claimed in co-pending application S.N. 560,570 filed January 23, 1956, for Eye Make-Up Kit now Patent 2,829,655 dated April 8, 1958, and SN. 655,331 filed April 26, 1957, for Eye Make-Up Kit, now Patent No. 2,902,041 dated Sept. 1, 1959, certain design features being covered in design application S.N.D. 49,420 filed January 27, 1958, for Combined Comb and Applicator, now Patent Des. 183,674 dated September 23, 1958.
In S.N. 560,570 there is described and claimed an eye make-up kit comprising a container cap having an applicator and an accessory tool shank mounted on the cap and extending in opposite directions from it, the shank having an accessory tool, illustrated as a comb, a container for liquid such as mascara being provided, the cap removably fitting on the container in liquid sealing relation with the applicator extending into the container and with the tool extending outside of the container, a removable cover being provided and fitting on the cap over the tool and serving as a handle for the applicator when the cap is removed from the container, the container or casing serving as a handle for the tool when the cover is removed.
In S.N. 655,331 there is described an improved arrangement providing an insert having a restricted opening to remove surplus liquid from the applicator when it is withdrawn, the insert being fixed in the neck of the casing and having threads, the cap having co-operating threads and the neck having a constrictor in supporting relation to the insert and having a coaxial hole in which the applicator slidingly fits.
The present invention provides a gasket as the above mentioned constrictor, the gasket having a conical seat and the head of the applicator having a co-operating conical head which expands the gasket both outwardly and downwardly to seal against leakage when the cap is screwed home, the cap having external threads received in a threaded sleeve which serves as a retainer for the gasket, the threaded sleeve and the gasket being housed in a gasket housing which is press fitted in the outer end of the casing or container. container are tinned to provide an airtight seal between the outside of the gasket housing and its fit in the casing and to make both the gasket housing and the casing noncorrosive.
For further details of the invention, reference may be made to the drawings wherein, FIG. 1 is a side view in elevation of a cosmetic make-up device according to the present invention, its base being shown partly in section.
FIG. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view.
FIG. 3 is a view corresponding to FIG. 1, with the make-up device removed from its base, and with the cover removed, the casing or container serving as a bandle for the accessory tool here shown as a comb.
FIG. 4 is a view corresponding to FIG. 1, the cap and its applicator and cover being removed from the container to expose the applicator for which the cover serves as a handle.
FIG. 5 is an enlarged sectional view showing the The housing and i gasket seal and associated parts, with parts broken away.
FIG. 6 is a similar enlarged view on line 66 of FIG. 2.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the make-up device 1 comprises a casing or contain 2 for a liquid such as mascara, a removable cap 3 and a removable cover 4.
As shown in FIG. 1, the container 2 and cover 4 are cylindrical and of the same diameter as the diameter of cap 3, and provided with rounded ends 5 and 6, end 6 removably fitting in a similarly shaped socket 7 in a base 8. When the parts 2, 3 and 4- are fitted together, the cap 3 is exposed at a cylindrical surface which forms a continuation of the casing 2. and the cover 4. The cap 3 is provided with longitudinally extending peripherally spaced grooves indicated at 9, to provide a rough surface for frictional engagement to facilitate rotating the cap to fasten it or remove it. As shown particularly in FIGS. 2 and 3, the upper portion of the cap 3 is provided with a cylindrical base 10, slightly smaller in diameter than the cap 3, to frictionally receive the lower end 11 of the cover 4 which seats on the outer peripheral end 12 of the cap 3. Arising from the base 10 is an accessory tool 13 here shown as a comb which has a contour such that it fits in the cover 4. When the cover 4 is removed, as indicated in FIG. 3, the comb 13 is exposed, the container 2 with the cap 3 in place on it, serving as a handle for the comb.
As shown in FIGS. 2, 4 and 5, extending in the opposite direction from the cap 3 is the shank 14 of an applicator 15, coaxial with the container or casing 2.
Fitting in the upper open end 16 of the casing 2 is a metal cup-like gasket housing 17, the upper ends 18 of casing 2 and housing 17 lying in a plane at right angles to the axis of the casing and serving as a seat against which the shoulder 19 of the cap 3 fits. The gasket housing 17 is rigidly held in a position shown, being press fitted in the casing 2 and the interior of these parts being tinned as described above. The housing 17 has an inner end wall 20 having a central aperture 21 which is larger than the cylindrical portion 22 of the applicator.
Fitting in the bottom of the housing 17 is a gasket 23 which fits against the cylindrical side wall of housing 17 as shown at 2 and fits on the inner end wall extending inwardly around the opening 21 as shown at 25 in FIG. 5. The gasket 23 is held in place by a retainer 26 which is inserted and press fitted in the outer end of the housing 17. The retainer or insert 26 has internal threads 27 mating with external threads 23 on the shank 14. Outwardly of the threads 23 the shank 1.4 has a conical head 29 which seats on the outer end of the gasket 23, as shown at 31;.
Referring to FIG. 5, it will be seen that when the cap 3 is screwed home as shown, the gasket 23 is expanded laterally to seal the inside of the housing 17 and the outside of the applicator shank portion 22 and is also expanded downwardly against the wall 20 to provide a seal at that point and around applicator portion 22. The seal between the gasket housing 17 and the container 2 is provided by the tinning as described above.
When the cap 3 is gripped at its exposed portion described above to rotate it and unscrew it from the container 2, on removal of the applicator from container 2, the gasket 23, While being relieved from pressure due to the head 29, is nevertheless of a diameter which, if unrestricted, would be less than the diameter of the applicator 15, to frictionally engage the applicator 15 and remove all of the mascara or other liquid from cylindrical portion 22 and from the top of ridges 31 whereby only that amount remains which is in the bottom portion of a series of concentric grooves or gullies indicated at 32 in FIG. 2, at the outer end of the applicator 15.
When the applicator is removed, the gasket 23 slid- (L! ingly fits the cylindrical portion 22 as well as the tops of the ridges 31 to remove the liquid from these parts, substantially the oniy liquid remaining on the applicator after its removal being that which is in the parallel spaced circular gullies 32 provided by the ridges indicated at 31. As the ridges 31. and their gullies 32 are in planes at right angles to the axis of the applicator, this facilitates application of mascara to the eyelashes, for the reason that assuming the eyelashes extend crosswise of the ridges 31, each portion of the eyelash remains somewhat in fixed relation to a given gully as the applicator is rotated, with no tendency, by reason of such rotation, to laterally displace the eyelashes either with relation to each other or to the applicator.
The head 29 and its gasket seat 3% for example, may each be conical with a taper of 45. The head 29 preferably seats with one-half turn. The insert 26 may be of aluminum or other noncorrosive material.
The casing 2 and cover 4 are preferably of brass. The comb i3, cap 3 and its threads 23, shank 27, cylindrical portion 22 and ridges 31 are all of a unitary molding and may for example, be of plastic such as styrene, while the gasket 23 which is of smaller internal diameter than the applicator is preferably also of plastic such as vinyl, the gasket thus being softer than the comb and applicator as vinyl is softer than styrene.
Various other materials may be used.
