JAMES H. REED AND DAVID S. GORDON, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
KNIFE FOR SHAVlNG 0R TRIMMING THl-I HEELS 0F BOOTS OR SHQEP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 306,958, dated October 21, 1884. Application filed "Mayo, 1884. No model) T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES H. REED and DAVID S. GORDON, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and Improved Knife for Shaving or Trimming Boot and Shoe Heels, of which the following, taken in connection withthe accompanying drawings, is a specification.
In trimming or shaving boot and shoe heels by machinery it is customary to use a knife having form similar to the shape of the intended heel-edge. Such knife, being connected with suitable machinery, is started at one corner of the heel and drawn entirely around to the other corner thereof, a small shaving being removed from the entire edge surface of the heel by this operation, and the form of the knife being imparted to the heel. The knives heretofore constructed and used for this purpose have no means for trimming the heel-seat, so called-that is, the edge of the heel which comes next to the shoe-upper. The trimming of this being done, as heretofore conducted, by an independent tool subsequent to the operation of trimming the heel.
It is the object of this invention to provide 7 a knife whereby the operation of shaving the heel and trimming the heel-seat may be effected at one and the same time; and the invention consists in a novel and pecnliarly-' constructed knife, of which Said knife is designed for use in combination with the machines now in common use, and for this purpose has its ends provided with grooves a a, to conform with the construction of said machines. The projection to the knife formed by angle a is designed to pass in between the upper'and the heel-seat in such manner as to allow a portion of the heel-seat to be removed by the cutting-edge f. Knives for this purpose have been heretofore used having a blade for shaping the outer surface of the heel, and an angular cutter for trimming the upper edge; and our invention consists in an improvement upon the same.
The knife constructed as herein shown and described may be attached to the machines now in use, and drawn around theheel in the usual way.
\Vhat we claim, and by Letters Patent desire to secure, is-
A heel -knife consisting of a blade, B, shaped to correspond to the contour of the heel, and formed with an angle near one end, to provide a cutter for trimming the top edge of the heel, the extremities being thickened and grooved, as-indicated by the letter (4, whereby the device may be supported in the machine, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof we have signed this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
