(Cl. 222209) This invention relates to a receptacle and more particularly to an improved container and closure for additive materials intended for mixing with bulk parenteral solutions or the like.
Parenteral solutions introduced intravenously into the body are widely used in treating various conditions, particularly where it is desired to get a medicament into the bloodstream of the patient with a minimum delay, or for feeding patients who are unable to receive substance orally. A wide variety of solutions are commercially available but it often happens that a particular situation requires a solution not normally available in commercial form but which can be prepared by adding a material to a commercial solution, or a mixture which is unstable and must be prepared immediately before ad ministration. Barton application Serial No. 474,475, filed December 10, 1954, discloses and claims an apparatus or pumping device for transferring additive materials from an additive container to a parenteralsolution container. This invention is concerned with improvements over the apparatus disclosed in the Barton application.
One feature of the invention is the provision of a container with a deformable or pumping closure retained thereon and having a surface on the closure interlocked with a complementary surface on one of the container and closure retaining means, restraining the deformable closure against separation from the container upon deformation thereof.
Another feature is that the closure has a flange which seats on the open mouth of the container and the mouth and flange are provided with interlocking surfaces.
A further feature is the provision of such a receptacle including a container, a closure including means for connection with a parenteral solution container and a retainer ring securing the closure to the additive container and having a weakened, tear-away portion. This permits removal of the additive material container closure so the contents may be transferred to a parenteral container from which the cover is removed, as contrasted with the type of container illustrated in the aforementioned Barton application having a permanently fixed stopper through which a connector device is inserted.
Further features and advantages of the invention will readily be apparent from the following specification and from the drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is an elevation of a receptacle embodying the invention;
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken generally along line 22 of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a view similar to FIG. 2 with the cap removed and the pumping portion of the closure deformed; and
FIGURE 4 is a section taken generally along line 4-4 of FIGURE 1.
Parenteral solutions are often administered under emergency conditions, as in the course of an operation or at the scene of an accident or the like. Accordingly, it is extremely desirable that equipment used in preparing the solutions and in administering them to the patient he completely foolproof. A particular feature of the construction disclosed herein is that the resilient or deformable closure for the additive container is so locked to the body of the container and the retaining ring that it has no tendency to separate from the container or to leak upon deformation during the pumping operation.
Turning now to the drawings, the additive receptacle includes a container 10 to which a resilient or deformable pumping closure 11 is secured by a retaining ring 12. The closure is provided with a connector device 13 which may be inserted through the stopper of a bulk parenteral liquid container. A cap 14 covers the end of connector 13.
Details of the construction are best seen in FIGURES 2 and 3. Container 11) is provided with an opening 16 surrounded by a lip surface 17. Pumping closure 11 has a generally cylindrical skirt portion 18 which is received within the opening 16 of container 10, and extends below an outwardly projecting flange 19 seated on lip surface 17. Extending upwardly from flange 19 is a dome-shaped pumping portion 20 which terminates in a connector sleeve 21. The end 24 of connector 13 is received within sleeve 21 with manually engageable flange 25 seated against the end thereof. The opposite end 26 of connector 13 is sharpened for insertion through the stopper of the parenteral solution container. Cap 14, which is received on the pointed end portion 26 of connector 13, is seated against a shoulder 27 formed in the wall thereof.
The lip surface 17 of the container 10 is formed with two offset horizontal or radial portions 17a and 17b separated by a generally vertical or circumferential surface 30. Flange 19 has a depending portion 31 which mates or interlocks with surface 30 of the container lip. Re tainer ring 12 engages the upper surface of flange 19 and is formed or rolled around the undersurface 33 of a rib 32 which projects outwardly from the container wall below tip 17. The retainer ring holds the closure 11 securely in place and keeps flange 19 interlocked tightly with surface 17 of the container.
When the pumping closure 11 is deformed, as illustrated in FIGURE 3, during the pumping operation, stresses are set up in the closure wall which have a tendency to lift the outer edge of flange 19 and to pull it inwardly away from the container lip surface 17 and retaining ring 12. If this should occur, the mixing operation is interrupted and the contents of the additive container and the parenteral solution bottle may become contaminated. However, the interlock relationship between container 10 and closure 11 by virtue of the mating container lip surface 17 and 30, and flange 19 with depending portion 31, insure that this will not occur.
Retaining ring 12 is preferably provided with score marks 35, 36 and 37. The portion 12a of the ring between closely spaced score marks 35 and 36 may be torn away and the ring bent about score mark 37, removing it from the container and permitting removal of closure 11. With this arrangement the contents of container 10 may be added to a parenteral solution container which has a removable stopper, merely by pouring the additive material into the open parenteral container.
While I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A receptacle, comprising: a container having an opening and a lip surrounding said opening, said lip having a pair of generally parallel annular off-set surfaces connected by a generally vertical annular surface; a deformable pumping closure for said opening having a cylindrical portion adapted to fit down into and along the sides of said opening, said cylindrical portion having an integral annular closure flange extending radially outward spaced above the bottom edge of said cylindrical portion and spaced below the point at which said pumping closure is u deformable, said closure flange being seated on said lip and having a depending rib along its outer edge providing an inwardly facing annular surface for engaging said lip vertical surface; a rib projecting outwardly from the container wall below the lip; and a retaining ring about said flange and said rib, said ring having an annular portion interlocked with the undersurface of said rib and having an inwardly extending annular flange overlying only said lip and closure flange, said ring flange providing downward pressure on the upper surface of said closure flange thereby to interlock said closure flange with the lip and prevent its separation from the container upon deformation of the pumping closure.
2. A receptacle comprising: a container with an opening; a closure for said opening, said closure having a cylindrical portion fitting into the container opening, a deformable portion axially spaced from the container opening, and an integral, annular flange extending radially outward between the cylindrical portion and the deformable portion, said flange being seated on a radial surface of said container surrounding the opening; a portion of said radial container surface being axially offset from another portion thereof and separated by a circumferential surface to provide an annular groove spaced outwardly from the container opening; an annular, depending closure flange portion fitting into the container groove and interlocking with the circumferential surface; and retaining means holding said depending flange portion in said groove and restraining the closure against separation from the container upon deformation of the closure.
3. A receptacle comprising: a container with an opening and a lip surrounding said opening, said lip having two annular, radial, surface portions separated by an annular, generally circumferential surface generally at right angles to the radial surface portions; a rib projecting from the container wall below the lip and having an undersurface; a deformable pumping closure closing the container opening; means retaining said closure on said container, said means having a portion interlocked with the rib undersurface and having an inwardly extending flange overlying the container lip and terminating at the opening of said container; a portion on said pumping closure received within the opening of the container; and a flange on said pumping closure lying between the container lip and the retaining means flange and having a depending surface interlocked with the generally circumferential lip surface, restraining the pumping closure against separation from the container upon deformation of the closure.
4. A receptacle comprising: a container having an opening and a lip surrounding said opening, said lip having a pair of generally parallel, annular, offset surfaces connected by a generally circumferential annular surface; a deformable pumping closure for said opening having an integral, annular flange extending radially outward and spaced below the point at which said pumping closure is deformable, said closure flange being seated on the container lip and having a depending rib along its outer edge providing an inwardly facing annular surface engaging the circumferential surface of the lip; a rib projecting outwardly from the container wall below the lip; and a retaining ring about said flange and rib, said ring having an annular portion interlocked with the undersurface of said rib and having an inwardly extending annular flange overlying the closure flange, said ring flange providing downward pressure on the upper surface of the closure flange thereby to interlock said closure flange with the lip and prevent its separation from the container upon deformation of the pumping closure.
5. A receptacle comprising: a container with an opening and a lip surrounding said opening, said lip having generally parallel, annular, offset surfaces connected by a generally vertical, annular surface; a rib on the outer container surface; a deformable closure for said opening; means retaining said closure on said container, said means having a surface interlocked with the undersurface of said rib; a circumferential surface on said closure complementary to and interlocked with the vertical container lip surface; and a surface on said retaining means holding said circumferential closure surface in interlocked relation with the vertical container lip surface during deformation of the closure.
6. A receptacle comprising: a container with an opening; a first radial lip surface surrounding said opening; a second radial lip surface offset downwardly from said first surface; a circumferential lip surface connecting the two radial surfaces; a closure for said opening, said closure having an axially deformable portion; a radial flange on said closure; offset bottom surfaces on said flange seated on the radial container lip surfaces; a circumferential surface on said flange between the offset bottom surfaces, said circumferential surface being interlocked with the circumferential lip surface; and retaining means holding the interlocking closure and lip surfaces together and restraining the closure against separation from the container upon deformation of the closure.
