A W wi h n, PETERS. PnowL'rlhognph. mmmmmmmmmmm c4 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NIOHLAS SOHERMERHORN, OF LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS.
LUBRICATOR OF ARBORS FOR SHELL-ROLLS.
DLECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 305,340, dated September 16. 1884.
Application filed July 22, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NIOHLAS SOHERMER- HORN, of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex' and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubrication of Arbors for Shell-Rolls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertainsto make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing,
which forms part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in the lubrication of arbors for shell-rolls; and it consists in the combination of the shell with the arbor, having a suitable recess or recesses in its side, and which is filled with some suitable absorbent material, and which has an oil or passage way extending from the recesses toward its end, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to so construct the arbor that the oil can be poured into the recesses in its ends outside of the shell-rolls, and which oil will then find its way into the recesses in the roll, and be fed by the absorbent material to the interior of the roll, whereby all necessity for removing the roll for the purpose of lubrication is done away with.
The accompanying drawing represents a vertical section of a device embodying my invention.
A represents an arbor, which has made in its surface a suitable depression or recess, 13, and in this depression or recess is placed a suitable absorbent material, C, of any kind. Leading from the bottom of this recess B is an oil or passage way, D, which extends out to the top of the arbor at its end, and outside of the end of the shell-roll G. The oil or other lubricating-fluid, being poured into the outer end of the oil or passage way, flows into the recess or depression B and saturates the absorbent material C, which is placed therein. This absorbent material then feeds this lubricant to the inner surface of the shell-roll as it revolves; also made in the arbor inside of the shell-roll are a number of grooves or recesses, O, in which the oil or lubricant will be caught and held. These grooves can be made to extend parallel with the arbor, or at right angles to it, as here shown, or in any other way that may be preferred.
As the oil can be fed to the arbor outside of Having 'thus described my invention, I
The combination of the arbor provided with the recess B, and the oil or passage way connecting therewith, the absorbent, material C, and the shell-roll, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
N IOHLAS SOHERMERHORN.
