DEVICE FOR THE COMBINED REGULATION OF THE TEMPERATURE OF AN OIL-BURNER Filed Sept. 2, 1959 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR. 69172 2 fi/afifi (1125 United States Patent 3,649,170 DEVICE FOR TIE CQMBZNED REGULA'I'KON OF THE TEWERATURE OF AN OR-BURVER Gerrit Blokhuis, Rijksstraatweg, Laag Keppen, Netherlands Filed Sept. 2, 1959, Ser. No. 837,691 Claims priority, application Netherlands Sept. 5, 1958 1 Claim. (Cl. 158-48) The invention relates to a device for the combined regulation of the temperature, of the oil-supply and of the combustion-air of an oil-burner, which device is provided with a room thermostat, with an adjusting member for the oil supply device, with a regulating device for the adjusting of the number of revolutions of the motor-driven air fan and with a switch for the switching in and out of the fan motor.
It is a special object of the invention to provide a device which can be readily employed with oilburners of different construction.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device by which the regulation can be performed in a very easy manner.
To realise the mentioned objects the regulation device according to the invention is characterised by the fact that the regulation means are mounted in a closed housing having a projecting plate on which a rotating knob is mounted. Such knob carries a toothed wheel 20 which meshes with holes 23 in a sliding rack 22, such rack having a sliding contact which glides on the contacts of the primary winding of a transformer, which also serves as regulating impedance choke for the fan motor. On the other side of the housing the winding for the thermostat is placed, which acts on a lever arm of the microswitch and on the lever for adjusting the metering pin of the oil supply device. According to another characteristic, the adjusting knob is provided at the bottom with means for the coupling with the adjusting means of the oil supply device. With reference to the drawing a form of execution of the device according to the invention will now be described; in the drawing are:
FIG. 1, a connecting diagram of the complete regulation;
FIG. 2, a longitudinfl section of the part of the device in which the regulation transformer is mounted with the adjusting knob, which part can be mounted on the oil suppiy device as a supplementing device.
As shown in FIG. 1 the regulation device according to the invention is provided with a transformer 1 with a primary Winding 2 and a secondary vwinding 3. The primary winding 2 is provided with several taps a, b, c, d, e and 1 which are mounted on a gliding track 4, which track functions as a terminal board for the open contact a and the terminals b, c, d, and e of the taps of the transformer. The primary winding 2 is connected to the ter minals 14, of the terminal board 8 whereas of course one terminal can be grounded. The secondary winding 3 of the transformer 1 is connected to the terminals 10 and 13 of the terminal board 8. The power supply is on the other side connected to the terminals v14, 15. On said taps a, b, c, d, e and f of the primary winding 2, which are connected to terminals of the gliding track terminal board 4, a gliding contact 5 can slide. With interconnection of a micro-switch 6 the sliding contact 5 is connected to the terminal .11 of the terminal board 3. Between the terminals 11 and 12 of the terminal board 8 the air fan motor 26 is connected whereas the terminal 12 is also connected to the power supply terminal 14. The room thermostat 27 is connected between the terminals 9 and 10, whereas the winding 7 is connected to the terminals 9 and 13. The winding 7 is intended for the heating of the bi-metalstrip 16, which according to the invention acts on two devices: first the micro-switch 6, which switches in and out the fan motor 26, and second it also acts on the pin 25 of the oil supply device 24.
When the sliding contact 5 is displaced the primary winding 2 of the transformer 1 is also used as a regulated autotransformer for the motor 26.
in FIG. 2 the mechanical execution of the regulation device according to the invention is shown. In a separate housing 17 the transformer 1 with its taps and gliding track terminal board 4 are mounted as also the bi-metalstrip 16 with its winding 7 which on one side acts on the pin 25 of the oil supply device by means of a lever 29 and on the other side with a lever 28 on the pin of the microswitch 6.
The housing 17 is divided by the plate 18 on which at the outer side the rotary knob 19 is mounted.
On the shaft of the knob .19 a toothed wheel 20 is mounted which meshes with a rack 22, the teeth of the toothed wheel 29 meshing with the holes 23 in the rack 22.
With this rack 22 the sliding contact 5 is connected which can slide over the contacts of the taps of the primary winding 2. At the bottom side, the shaft of the rotary :knob =19 is provided with a coupling member 21 (e.g. a square socket), for the coupling with the oil supply adjusting means of the oil supply device.
By the turning of the knob 19 therefore the oil supply and the air supply are simultaneously regulated, whereas the switching in and out of the air supply is achieved by the micro switch 6.
The regulation of the combustion is performed as follows: When the heating is put into operation the room thermostat 27 is for example adjusted on 30 C. The regulation knob 19 is turned and the contact 5 is placed on tap b at which time the oil supply is minimal for first the plant must warm up. The micro-switch 6 for the motor 26 is switched out and thus the motor 26 is, for the time being, at a standstill. By connection to the secondary winding 3 of the transformer 1, under control of thermostat 27, the winding 7 is warmed up by the closed thermostat-contact. The cold bi-metalstrip 16 which in the beginning presses down the pin 25 of the oil supply device on a minimum oil supply and keeps the micro switch 6 in its switched-out position will now be warmed up and therefore bent. This allows the micro-switch 6 to be switched in, by which the fan motor 26 starts in accordance with the switched-in tap of the transformer, whereas at the same time the oil supply, by the pressing of the bi-metalst-rip 16 on the pin 25, gradually increases. After this, by means of the knob 19, the sliding contact 5 is gradually switched on a next contact until the wanted room temperature is obtained. Then the room thermostat 27, which regulates the heating of the winding 7 of the bi-metalstrip 16 is adjusted on the wanted room temperature after which the regulation is fully automatic. When the room temperature is too high the room thermostat is switched out and the bi-metalstrip 16 becomes cold and therefore straight, the micro-switch 6 in the motor circuit of the fan motor is switched out, the pin 25 is released and therefore the oil supply to the burner is adjusted at a minimum. Also when the power supply is interrupted the bi-metalstrip l6 gets cold and the pin 25 of the oil supply device is adjusted at minimum supply.
In the practical execution of the regulation device according to the invention the whole apparatus can be mounted in one single housing but within the scope of the invention the regulation device can consist in two separate is parts which are separately mounted in which case, for example, the part with the regulation transformer and the micro-switch are mounted in a separate housing which then, as a complementary device is mounted on the oil supply dew'ce of an existing oil burner. In this manner the regulation of such existing oil supply device can be improved.
By the regulation according to the invention the advantage of the combined regulation of the air supply in accordance with the oil supply adjusted on the oil supply device and in accordance with the temperature adjusted on the room thermostat can be obtained.
