Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAS. B. COFFIN, OF HAYESVILLE, OHIO.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,464, dated October 23, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. B. COFFIN, of I-Iayesville, in the county of Ashland and State ot Ohio. have invented a new and Improved Washing-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same` reference being had to the accompanying drawing', making part ot this speciiication,in whicl -f Figure l represents a longitudinal vertical section ot' my invention, the line a, Fig. 2, indicating the plane of section. Fig. is a horizontal section of the same, taken in the plane indicated by the line i, y,
Fig. l. Fig. S is an inverted plan of the rubber.
Similar letters of reference in the three figures indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the arrangenient. of two disks, operating in an ordinary wash tub, one for pounding and the other for rubbing and squeezing the clothes, on the opposite ends of a vertical shaft, in coinbination with a swivel head to which said shaft is fastened by a spring catch, and which has its bearings in the arms of a double slotted oscillating lever in such a manner that either one of the disks can be brought to operate on the clothes, and that the rubber may be used for rubbing or squeezing as may be desired.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation with reference to the drawing.
A tub A, of the ordinary form and construction is placed lirnily on a bench B, of suitable height and strength. Above this bench rises the trame C, and a pin a, passing through the ends of the longitudinal timbers of this frame forms the fulcrum for the lever D. This lever consists of two arms 7), the ends of which are connected by cross-bars c. The arms b, are provided with slots cl, fitting on the ends ot' the pin a, so that a longitudinal sliding motion and also au oscillating motion can be imparted to the lever I). Between the arms b, of the lever, and secured to the same by means of pivots c, is the swivel head E, which forms the bearing for the vertical arbor f, to the ends ot' which the disks F, and G, are firmly secured. The arbor f, is provided with several grooves g, at different distances 'from the two ends and a spring catch 7L, which is attached to the side of the swivel head E,
serves to adjust the arbor and the disks to the required position.
The disk F, is furnished with a number of studs or pins 1I, on its outer surface, and it is intended tor pounding the clothes, and the outer surface of the diskG, is provided with a number ot' squares Z, projecting above said surface for the purpose of rubbing and squeezing the clothes. During the time one oi' the disks is to be used, the swivel head E, is guided by vertical slots j, in the sides of the frame C, and springs L, acting on the under sides of the arms I), facilitate the operation.
In order to pound, the swivel head E, is turned so that the disk F, comes to bear on the clothes, and said disk is now adjusted by means of the spring catch h, according to the quantity of clothes in the tub` For the purpose of squeezing the clothes, the lever D, is raised, and the swivel head E, is turned so that the disk G, comes to bear on the clothes, and after having adjusted this disk to the desired height the clothes are pressed and squeezed by working the lever D, up and down. And if now a suitable lever is inserted between the pins z', of the disk F, and after having released the spring catch lz, a reciprocating rotary motion can be imparted to the disk G, and the clothes are rubbed.
The bottom of the tub may be made corrugated in order to produce a better eii'ect in rubbing and squeezing the clothes.
This machine is very simple in its construction, it is easily operated, and all its parts are so constructed that they do not easily get out of order.
Having thus fully described my inven tion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The arrangement of the disks F, and G, one being provided with pins t', and the other with squares Z, attached to the opposite ends of an arbor f, in combination with the swivel head E, and with the oscillating double slotted lever D, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The arrangement of the springcatch z., in combination wit-h the grooves g, in the arbor f, for the purpose described.
JAS. B. COFFIN.
