G. S. BRIOKER & W. B SHOEMAKER. SPIKE FASTENING FOR THRASHING MACHINES, m.
Patented Aug. 26, 1884.
uuuuuuuuuvu NITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
GEORGE S. BRIOKER AND \VILLIAM B. SHOEMAKER, OF NEWVILLE, PA.
SPIKE-FASTENING FOR TH RASHING-MACHINES, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 304,162, dated August 26, 1884.
Application filed May 25, 1983.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE S. BRICKER and \VILLIAM B. SHOEMAKER, citizens of the United States, residing at Newville, in the county of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spike-Fastenings forThrashing-Machines, Cotton-Grins, &c., of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention consists of a new combination of devices for spikefastenings for thrashingmachines, &c., which will be fully understood from the following description and claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an end view of a thrashing-cylinder with our improved mode of fastening the spikes to the cylinder. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the concave of the thrashing-machine, show ing one row of spikes and the mode of fastening the same. Fig. 3 isa top view ofa section of the cylinder. Fig. 4 is a side View of a spike. Fig. 5 is a detached section.
The object of our invention is to conveniently and securely fasten the spikes either in the cylinder or concave of a thrashing-machine, and at the same time allow the easy removal and insertion of the spikes when broken or worn.
The cylinder Aand the concave B are made with grooves D the whole length of the same, I
(No model.)
said groove running along each row of spikeholes; and the spikes G are made with anotch, 0, Fig. 4. Vhen these are inserted in place in thebars or body of the cylinder or concave, the notch 0 corresponds or comes in line with the groove D. Then a rod or key, E, is slid endwise into the groove, so as to lock the whole row of spikes firmly in place. The rod or key E is fastened by means of a screw, F, inserted either at the end or side of the rod, or by a key or other convenient means.
The abovedescribed mode of fastening spikes may be applied to cotton-gins and other similar machines, and the grooves and keyrod instead of being square may be of any suitable shape.
GEORGE S. BRICKER. \VILLIAM B. SHOEMAKER.
