Description

April 1960 J. ZALKIND 2,931,558
UAILABLE MAP HOLDER Filed Sept. 13, 1957 INVENTOR. JOSEPH ZALK/NQ United States Patent MAILABLE' MAP HOLDER Joseph Zalkind, New York, NY.
Application September 13, 1957, Serial No. 683,795
Claims. (Cl. 229-72) This invention relates to mailing pieces and, more particularly, to mailing pieces for holding automobile touring maps.
It is an object of the invention to provide a sturdy and compact mailing envelope for containing maps and advertising literature.
It is another object of the invention to provide a mailing envelope usable as a convenient storage means for maps, travel notes, etc.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a device of the kind described which may be cheaply and easily manufactured on standard machines.
It is a still further object of the invention to provide a mailingdevice having means to hold short pieces of paper secure in long pockets so that they will not slide.
Briefly, my invention contemplates the provision of a map mailing and storage envelope made of a single sheet of heavy paper and comprising a pair of elongated pockets having openings facing in the same direction, namely, in an upward direction when the device is used as a convenient map storage means by hanging it on the dashboard of an automobile. The device is so constructed that it may be compactly folded for mailing as an advertising piece complete with maps and advertising literature in the pockets.
, A detailed description of my invention will now be given in conjunction with the appended drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing one face of the device "wherein the device is in a folded condition for mailing;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the folded device showing the opposite or address side;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the unfolded device showing the envelopes which comprise the invention;
Figure 4 is a section through 4-4 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a section through 5--5 of Figure 3; and
Figure 6 is a section through 6-6 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawing, my invention comprises a two-envelope structure made of a single sheet of material having a main panel 10 with a pair of infolded flaps 12 and 14 lapped in a glued margin 17 and having coacting curved cutouts to form the single arcuate cutout 20 for rendering access to the fiat pocket between panel 10 and the flap structure. The bottom of the flaps are marginally glued at 24 to the panel 10 to complete the pocket. Flap 14 is provided with an inwardly foldable tab 27. Thus, when paper which is shorter than the length of the pocket is inserted, one edge thereof can be wedged under the tab 27 to hold the paper secure against sliding and jostling which might cause it to work itself out of the pocket.
The lower portion of panel 10 is formed with a pleat 2,931,558 Patented Apr. 5, 1960 "ice 30, on each side, and a pleat 33 at the bottom edge, which latter pleat extends to an upwardly rising front panel 36 having side flaps 38 glued to one of the elements of a respective pleat 30, whereby an expanding type of compartment is effected.
Panel 10 is provided with an aperture 40 so that the device may be hung on any conveniently located knob protruding from the dashboard of a car whereby the pocket and compartment are readily accessible to a car driver 0: passenger, as will be apparent from'eonsideration of Figure 3.
As seen on Figure 2, a cutout 43 is provided through panel 10 in registry with a predetermined portion of the pocket formed by fiaps 12 and 14 so that any advertising literature, etc., inserted in the pocket can bear a mailing address visible through aperture 43.
The expandable compartment below the pocket is intended to hold one or more maps. Inasmuch as the total weight of the device and contents may be considerable, the area around aperture 40 may be reinforced with a glued fibrous ring if so desired.
In order to provide for foldability in mailing, various fold lines 46 may be provided, as shown in Figure 3, and it will be readily understood that the pocket and compartment may be oriented so as to be contiguous and held together by means of the upper portion 49 of panel 10, the entire package being secured by means of a conventional fiber button and string arrangement 52, as shown in Figure 1, formailing purposes.
Having thus described my invention, I am aware that various changes may be made without departing from the spirit thereof and, accordingly, I do not seek to be limited to the precise illustration herein given except as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A mailable map and advertising literature storage device comprised of an integral die cut and folded paper board member having a main panel of generally rectangular configuration comprising top, bottom and side edges; a flat pocket comprising a pair of flaps foldably joined to the side edges and extending transversely across the main panel into marginal meeting positions and having margins glued to each other, said flaps having lower marginal portions glued to said main panel; a pair of pleats fold ably joined to respective side edges of said main panel, a pleat foldably joined to the bottom edge of said main panel and extending upwardly forming a front panel, said front panel having side flaps glued to said side pleats, the construction of said front panel and pleats thus affording a flat and expandable compartment longitudinally spaced from said fiat pocket, said main panel forming the rear Wall of said fiat pocket and said compartment.
2. In a device as set forth in claim 1, said main panel having an extension area extending beyond said flat pocket, at least one fold line intermediate said area and said pocket, and a fold line intermediate said pocket and said compartment, whereby said pocket and compartment may be folded into continuity with each other, and said extension area of said main panel folded around the adjacent edges of the contiguous pocket and compartment.
3. In a device as set forth in claim 2, including an aperture in said extension area of said main panel for hanging said device in unfolded condition with upwardly opening sides of said pocket and compartment for ready access.
4. In a device as set forth in claim 3, including an additional aperture through said main panel in predetermined ,9 position with respect to said pocket for viewing an address printed on material placed within said pocket.
5. In a device as set forth in claim 4, including a tab cut from one of the flaps forming said pocket and bez1dable into said pocket to secure short pieces of paper 5 placed in said pocket.
