UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
CLUDIUS D. LEGER, OE VATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE VATERBURY VATCH COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,042, dated February 5, 1884.
Applicutiontiled September 12, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLAUDiUs D. LEGER, of Vaterbury, in the county of New Haven, and in the State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vatches, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full` clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part ot' this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective -view of the front or dial side of a watch-movement provided with my sweep seconds-.hand and operative Fig. 2 is a like View of the lower side of the front plate, showing the special mechanism employed for driving said secondshand, and Eig. 3 is an enlarged section upon line x x of Figs. l and 2.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
My invention is an improvement upon what is known as the IVaterbury watch,77 and'has l'or its object the attachment thereto of a sweep seconds-hand; and to this end it consists in the construction and combination of parts, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawings, A represents a top plate, and B a bottom plate, which are connected together and held in relative positions by means of pillars C in the usual manner.
Pivotcd with their arbors between the plates A and B are the balance-wheel D, escapewheel E, third wheel E, and second wheel G, which wheels are connected by means of pinions, and constitute the principal portion of the time-train of the watch.
The upper center arbor, H, is hollow iustead of being made solid, as heretofore, and within the sameisjournaled an arbor, I, which at its outer end projects sufficiently to enable it to receive a sweep seconds-hand, K, and at its inner end is journaled within a bridge or cock, L, that is secured upon the lower face of the plate A.
Between the cock L and plate A a pinion, is secured upon the arbor I, which pinion meshes with and is driven by a toothed wheel, M, that is secured to or upon the arbor of the second wheel G, and is driven by the same. The relative proportions ot' the wheel M and pinion t' are such as to cause the seconds-hand K to move around the dial of the watch once each minute, and the fraction of a second indicated by each separatemovement ofthe same is governed by the vibrations of the balancewheel D, and may be varied by changing the relative proportions ot' the wheels and pinions constituting the time-train.
Upon the center arbor, H, below the seconds-hand l, is placed a minutes-bami, N, and below the latter, upon the hub ot' a dial-wheel, O, which Vis journaled upon said arbor, is placed au hours-hand, l?, as in the watch as heretofore constructed.
The seconds -handoperating mechanism shown is easily, quickly, and at a triiiing ex- ,4 pense applied to the watch, without change in the arrangement of the parts of its timetrainer interference with the operations of the same.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits ot' iny invention, what I claim as new is- In combination with the time train described, the arbor Ljournalcd within the hollow arbor H, provided with the pinion /1' and carrying the seconds-hand K, and the wheel M, secured to and rotated by the arbor of the second wheel G, and meshing with said pinion, substantially as and for the purpose specitied.
In testimony that I claim the ibregoing I have hereunto set my hand this lith day ot" June, A. D. 1883.
(TLA L'Dl US l). LEGER.
