.To all whom, t may concer/2,:
Be it known that l, WILLARD M. HARRIS, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Vyoming, in the .county of Kent and' Stateof Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had which- Figure l is a plan, Fig. 2 a side elevation,
Fig. 3 a central longitudinal vertical section,
and Figs. 4 and 5 details, of a cultivator constructed in accordance with my invention.
Like letters refer to likeparts in all the figures.
' My invention relates to that class of cultivators which are mounted ou wheels and are intended to straddle the rows and operate upon the soil between and alongside the rows; and one of the objects of my invention is to arrange the teeth or shovels of the cultivator in pairs, and to connect each pair with the .frame-work in such a manner that each pair will be adjustably held independently of the others, and so that `the central pair may be under the entire control of the operator, in order that said pair,which straddles the row,1na y be swayed sidewise to conform with any irregularities inthe row.
Other objects and advantages will appear in thefollowing description, and the novel features of `my invention will be specifically set.

All the brakes are of similar construction, and a description of one is sufficient. Each shovel of each' pair is secured to the usual clevis, G, retained pivotally on a curved beam, H, by a bolt or pin, le., and held in operative position by the usual wooden pin, y. Each shovel is secured to a suitable casting, I', which is soeketed to receive the ends of the beam H, which is cylindrical and shouldered, as shown in Fig. 4, so that by use of a binding-screw, fi, each shovel may be properly adjusted laterally with relation to the path of the machine. Three depending rods or brackets, J, are provided, one located beneath and serving as the pivot-bolt of the eveuer and passing through the front cross-bar, B, and one on each side of the machine and passing through and secured to the rear' cross-bar, B. In this instance each of the rods J is bent and extended to a cross-bar in front of that through which it passes, for the purpose of giving additional strength to the rods J and to the parts thus joined, but I do not limit myself to thisexact feature of construction.
Upon the upright portion of the rods J, l mount a sliding clevisblock, K, having a bind ing or set screw, 7s, whereby it may be secured at different elevations to modify the dip of the shovels and the draft of the machine.
'Each of the beams H is secured to vertical pivots h in a link, L, which .is connected to the clevis-block K by a horizontal pivot or bolt, Z, so that vertical and horizontal movements may take place in the shovels while the machine is in operation. The beams H of each brake are united by a band, bar, or strap, M, having an eye or loop, m, to which a chain, N, is attached, the opposite en d of which is secured to a shaft or roll, O, provided with an operatingdever, P, whereby the chains may be wound up to shorten and unwound to lengthen them. In order to raise or depress the bra-kes, as usual, a catch, p, serves to hold the lever in a depressed position. rlhe strap M of the central brake is arched to straddle the row, and the chain of this brake passes around a friction-pulley, O', in order that sidewise movements of the central brake may be accomplished as easily as possible. The beams H of the central brake are each providedl with a stirrup, H, in order that an operator, while sitting in the seat B, may with his feet guide the central brake along crooked rows, and thus avoid destroying the crop where the rows are crooked.
Each of the side brakes is provided nearits pivotal connection with a cross bar or strap, R, (see Fig. 5,) which projects outwardly, and is connected by a link, S, to a depending bracket, T, through which the link isvpassed, and by means of nuts U the link is drawn so as to determine the path of the side brake. In this manner they are prevented from approaching too near the side rows of the crop.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to all of the details or the exact proportion and relative arrangement of the parts herein shown, as I may vary the same in any measure and to any degree within the skill of persons conversant in constructing agricultu ral implements.
lt will be seen that by moving the straps, bands, or bars M along the arms H, the shovels may be regulated as to their distance apart, so as to adapt them to rows of different width.
W'hen the corn or other plants have grown too tall to use the central brake, thelatter may be disconnected from the frame, and be either dispensed'with or secured to and made to drag in the rear of one of the side brakes.4
Having described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a cultivator of the class described, the
Vthree pairs of shovels, each pair constructed as shown, and pivoted to the frame independently of the others, substantially as specied.
2. In a cultivator of the class described, the three separate pairs of shovels independently and pivotally connected to the frame, substantially as specified.
8. In a cultivator of the class described, the combination, with the fra-me, of two independent outside brakes, each carrying a pair ot' shovels, and a central independent pivotallyconnected brake carrying a pair.. of shovels, substantially as specified.
4. In a cultivator, the combination of abrake comprising two beams and a uniting band or strap, a bracket with a sliding clevis, provided with a link horizontally pivoted thereto and vertically pivoted to said beams, substantially as specified.
5. The combination of the beams H H, lilik L, having vertical pivots h and horizontal pivots l, and the clevis K, substantially as shown and described.
6. The combination of the brakes F F, the central brake, E, links L, clevisesK, brackets J, chains N, shaft O, pulley O, and lever P, substanti ally as shown and described.
7. The combination of theside brakes, F, straps R, links S, and bracket T, substantially as shown and described. v
8. Thecombination of the central pivotallyconnected brake, E, provided with stirrups H, with the independent side brakes, F, on each side thereof, provided with the chain N, strap R, and with the link S and means for adjusting the same as to its length, substantially as shown and described.
