PATENT GFFICE.
BERNHARD HARTMANN, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
EAR-RING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,810, dated February 5, 1884.
Application filed September 26, 1883. (No model.)
To on whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNHARD HARTMANN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ear-Rings, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention has reference to animproved construction of ear-rings or studs by which they can be conveniently and securely at tached to the lobe of the ear, and by which, also, several diamonds or other precious stones can be arranged one below the other in an artistic manner.
The invention consists of one or more settings, which are connected by a pivot link or chain and swivel-link with a screw-nut that is adjusted on the threaded puncture-bar of one of the settings when the ear-ring is applied to the ear.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved ear-ring, shown as arranged with several settings. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical longitudinal section of one setting and its means of attachment to the ear. v
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding' parts.
Referring to the drawings, a representsa setting for a diamond or other precious stone. This setting is provided with a fixed and threaded puncture-bar, b, that is passed through a puncture-hole in the lobe of the'ear. A screw-nut, c, is fitted to the puncture-bar b, and provided with a contracted neck portion, to which is applied a swivel-link, d, that is again connected by an intermediate pivot link or chain, c, with an eye, f, at the base of thesetting a,
as shown in Fig. 2. If desired, two or more settings, a, a, maybe suspended below the setting a, in which case the connecting link or chain c is applied to the eye f of the lowermost setting, as shown in Fig. 1.
In adjusting the ear-ring to the ear, the threaded puncture-bar is passed through the perforation of the lobe'of the ear, and then the nut c screwed up against the rear side of the lobe.
screw-nut c.
The flanged base of the screw-nut c is preferably made slightly convex and perforated, so that it presses against the lobe when being screwed up against the same, and holds the ear-ring or stud firmly in position without liability to get unscrewed therefrom.
The sleeve-shaped center portion of the nut 0 may be split longitudinally, so as to exert a kind of spring-pressure on the puncture-bar, and prevent thereby the unscrewing of the A small ornamental pendant can, furthermore, be attached to the lowermost setting, to add to the artistic appearance of the ear-ring.
As all the settings are supported close to the lobe of the ear without dangling about below the same, the ear-ring conforms to the prevailing taste, while admitting the use of a number of diamonds.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with one or more settings, a a, suspended one below the other, the uppermost setting having a fixed screw-- threaded shank or puncture-bar, b, of a screwnut, 0, adjustable on said shank, andof an intermediate link or chain, c, that is swiveled at one end to said screw-nut and pivoted at the other end to one of. the settings, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a setting, a, having a fixed and screw-threaded puncture-bar, b, a screw-nut, 0, having a contracted portion, a
link, d, swiveled to the contracted portion, and a link or chain, c, that connects the swivel-link d with an eye, f, of the setting, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BERNHARD HABTMANN.
